LESSON #5:

SIGHT DISTANCES
SIGHT DISTANCE
-is the length of roadway ahead
visible to the driver. For purpose
of design and operation it is
termed stopping sight distance
and passing sight distance.
SUMMIT CURVE
a. When S<L
L=

b. When S>L
L=2S
Where:
L=length of summit curve
S=sight distance
= height of driver’s eye
=height of object
A=algebraic difference in grades
If and are not given:
=1.14m
=0.15m
SAG CURVE
a. When S<L
L=

b. When S>L
L=2S
If H and are not given,
L=
L=2S
c. Maximum velocity of car
moving vertical sag curve.

STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE
-is the total distance traveled during three-
time intervals.
a.The time for the driver to perceive the
hazard.
b.The time to react
c.The time to stop the vehicle after brakes
are applied.

Based on the National Safety Council,

average driver reaction time is ¾ seconds.
SAFE STOPPING DISTANCE
S=d + D
S=Vt
Where:
S=stopping distance
t=perception-reaction time
v=velocity of vehicle
f=coefficient of friction between tires and
pavement
G=gravity (9.81m/)
NOTE: +G for uphill, -G for downhill
WHEN S<L
L= (in meters)
L= (in feet)
WHEN S>L
L=2S (in meters)
L= 2S(in feet)
Where:
In meters: In feet
=3.75ft
=1.14m
=0.15 m
=6 inches

PROBLEM #1
A vertical summit curve have
tangent grades of +2.2% and -
1.8%. The required stopping sight
distance is 100m. Find the length
of the curve.
PROBLEM #2
A vertical sag parabolic curve has
a length of 141m with tangent
grades of -1.5% and +2.5%
intersecting at station
12+640.22m. Determine the
length of the sight distance.
PROBLEM #3
A 5% grade intersects a -3.4% grade at station 1+990.
Design a vertical summit parabolic curve connecting the
two tangent grades to conform with the following safe
stopping sight distance specifications.
Design velocity=60kph
Height of driver’s eye from the road pavement=1.37m
Height of an object over the pavement agead=100mm
Perception-reaction time=0.75 sec
Coefficient of friction=0.15
Determine the following:
a. Stopping sight distance.
b. Length of curve.
PROBLEM #4
A vertical sag curve has a
descending grade of -1.2% starting
from the P.c. and ascending grade of
+3.8 passing thru the P.T. The curve
has a sight distance of 180m.
Determine the length of the vertical
curve and the maximum velocity of
the car that could pass thru the
curve.
PROBLEM #5 (Practice)
A vertical summit curve has a back
tangent of +2% and a forward tangent of -
3% intersecting at station 10+220.60 m
and elevation of 200m. The design speed
of the curve is 80kph. Assuming coefficient
of friction is 0.30 and perception reaction
time of 2.5s. Determine the safe stopping
sight distance and the length of the curve.
