Method of Joint for Trusses
A truss is a structure that consists of slender
members that are connected to one another
at their ends to form a rigid structure
Simple truss:
Consist of several
units of basic
triangle
Three elements
connected at their
ends constitute a
rigid frame
Members are pin
connected
Assume all truss
members are two force
members.
A two force member
is the one in
equilibrium under
the action of two
forces only applied
at itstwo
The theforces
ends.
applied at the ends
are equal, opposite
Forces
and collinear.
are either
compression or
tension
Objectives in truss analysis:
Determine the support
reactions for the structure, and
Determine the internal forces
in all of the members
Assumptions in truss
analysis:
All loading s are applied at the
joints.
All members are connected by
smooth pins.
Compute the
internal forces in
each member of
the truss structure

Method Section for Trusses
sed on the principle that if a body is in equilibrium, then all
he body Must be in equilibrium.
e can pass a section through the truss to divide the truss int
s and each side is considered in equilibrium.
nerally, the section should pass through a maximum of thre
mbers.
o need to proceed with calculations from joint to joint. Force
ny desired member may be found directly from the analyses
section witch has cut that member.
u can apply equilibrium equations to any of the two sides (y
d all three equilibrium equations).
