What is LDR Sensor
 Definition:
An LDR (Light Dependent Resistor), also known as a photoresistor, is a type of resistor whose resistance
changes based on the intensity of light it is exposed to.

 Some Important Points:

 LDRs are typically made of semiconductor materials such as
cadmium sulfide (CdS) or lead sulfide (PbS).
 The resistance of an LDR is inversely proportional to the
intensity of light.
 The sensitivity of an LDR depends on factors such as the
material used, the surface area exposed to light, and the
wavelength of light.
 LDR sensors are made of semiconductor materials whose
resistance changes with the amount of light falling on them.
 They are also known as photoresistors or light-dependent
resistors.
Interfacing of LDR
Interfacing of LDR
For the interfacing of LDR with Arduino we require some
components. They are:
• LDR Sensor
• Arduino Uno
• Relay Module
• Bread Board
• Dupont Cables

LDR SENSOR is nothing but a light-dependent resistor, its

resistance changes according to changes in light intensity.
The LDR SENSOR is made of photosensitive material. The
zig-zag lines you see on the sensor are nothing but a
photosensitive material.
When light falls on this material the resistance of the
material changes and hence conductivity. This was the
original operation of LDR SENSOR Now we will learn how
to interface LDR SENSOR with Arduino uno.
Working of LDR
Working of LDR
The working principle of a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor is based on the change in its resistance in
response to varying light intensities. An LDR primarily consists of a photoresistor, a component whose
resistance varies with the amount of light it is exposed to.
In low light conditions, the photoresistor has a high resistance, allowing minimal electrical current to pass
through. As the intensity of light increases, the resistance of the photoresistor decreases, allowing more
current to flow. This characteristic enables the LDR to act as a light-sensitive device.
Applications of LDR

1 The photoresistor is typically used to measure

the intensity and presence of light.

2 LDR sensors are used in lights that turn on

and off automatically based on light.

3
LDR sensors are used to design optical
circuits.
4 In solar street lighting LDR can be used.

5 Easy to use and affordable as they are not

much expensive.
