FOOD SAFETY
● The act aims to establish a single reference point for all matters
relating to food safety and standards, by moving from multi-
departmental control to single command.
● The act lays down science based standards for articles of food and
to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import,
to ensure availability of safe and whole some food for human
consumption.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority
of India (FSSAI) is an agency of the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Government of India set up in 2008.
● The Body is functional as per the
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
● Functional from 2011
● The authority also has 6 regional
offices located in Delhi, Guwahati,
Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, and
Chennai.
● FSSAI is responsible for protecting
and promoting public health through
regulation and supervision of food
safety.
Functions of FSSAI

FSSAI LICENCE NUMBER
All FBOs have to display the FSSAI license number received at the time of grant
of the FSSAI license in the product and within the premises.
Basic FSSAI registration
• This license is meant for FBOs, such as small
manufacturers, storage units, transporters,
retailers, marketers, distributors, dhaba, boarding
houses serving food.
• Issued by the state government.
• The kind of license that gets allotted would
depend on what the business is considered eligible
for.
• Meant primarily for units earning upto INR 12
lakh per year.
FSSAI registration state license
This license is meant for the following entities:
• Small and medium manufacturers, food operator
units serving under central government agencies
like railways, airports, seaports, defence, etc.,
storage units, transporters, wholesalers, retailers,
marketers, distributors club/canteen.
• Confined to states where you wish to work in, and
it is necessary to work in one state only.
• Primarily for units that earn in excess of INR 12
lakhs per year.
FSSAI registration central license
This license is meant for the following entities:
• Importers, 100% export-oriented units, large scale
manufacturers, companies that work with the
Central government organizations, premises in
airports, premises seaports, hotels, restaurants.
• Issued by the National Government.
• Primarily for units with income in excess of INR 20
crore per year.
