According to WHO (1948),
Health is a state of complete physical,
mental and social wellbeing and not merely
an absence of disease or infirmity.”

Health is a fundamental right of human being.
Health is inter-sectoral.

Health involves individuals, state and
international responsibilities.
Health and its maintenance is a major social
investment.
Health is world-wide social goal.
COMMUNITY HEALTH
According to WHO (1973), Community Health
is defined as,
“Community health means the states of health
of the members of community, problems
affecting their health and health care
facilities available in community.”

According to Alma-Ata declaration (1978),


“Community health means providing primary
health facilities with the aim to achieve
HEALTH FOR ALL.”
OBJECTIVES
 To increase average span of human life.
 To decrease mortality rate (Infant Mortality Rate &
Maternal Mortality Rate)
 To increase capability of community to deal with their
own health problems.
 To decrease morbidity rate.
 To increase the physical, mental and social well-being
of individual.
 To prevent and control communicable and non-
communicable diseases.
 To increase the pace of adjustment of individual to his
environment.
 To provide total health care to improve and to improve
quality of life.
 To prepare health personnel to provide better health
services to community.
DEFINITION
According to American Nurses’ Association
(ANA), 1980, Community Health Nursing is
defined as,
“A synthesis of nursing
practice and public health
practice applied to promoting
and preserving the health of
populations.”
According to Halfdan Mahler (1985), former
director of WHO,
“Basic element of community health nursing is
 Expansion of primary care of health
 Faith of patients in nurses.”

“As per this new perspective, nurses will be


more useful for people than doctors, in the
field of health.”
Community health nursing focuses on
Health of
 Individuals

 Families, and

 Groups

And this is how this affects


 Community as a whole.
PHILOSOPHY
Community health nursing believes that
health is a fundamental human right and an
integral part of growth and development.
It supports that entire community, as well as
individuals, families and aggregates is a focus
for community health nursing practice.
It identifies the need of holistic care
approach.
It realizes that health promotion and primary
prevention are major activities in community
health nursing practice.
It supports that community based efforts and
community involvement is essential for risk
reduction.
It honours the social and cultural differences
and values of individuals and community
about health and supports the health
promoting behaviour in an acceptable
manner.
It realizes that multi-disciplinary team
activities and programmes are essential to
attain the objectives of community health.
It believes in the overall development and
wellbeing of the individuals, families,
It believes to work together under a
competent leader for the common good.
It supports the importance of freedom to
express one’s individuality.
There is a continuous search for new
knowledge that serves current purposes. The
knowledge must have meaning.
It remains the effective force in society by
utilizing and participating in the development
of health knowledge and technology.

man.
