(Apply Order of Operations)

S.W. simplify and evaluate

expressions
An Exponent is the number that tells how
many times the base number is used as a
factor.
The Base number is the number that is
used as a repeated factor.

In 24, 2 is the base number and 4 is

the exponent.
When we say the power of a number, it is
an expression that represents repeated
multiplication of the same factor.
For example, 81 is a power of 3 because
81 = 3  3  3  3. You then can write a
power using a base number and
exponent. So, 81 = 34
Special Names:
•squared (power of 2)

•cubed (power of 3)
• Any number to the power of
zero
is equal to one.
• In order to evaluate a power, it is helpful
to write out the repeated multiplication
problem
Examples:

4
¿ 2 ∙ 2∙ 2 ∙ 2=16

3
¿ 5 ∙ 5 ∙5=125
