Hardware Vs Software
2

Hardware:
 Devices that are required to store and execute (or run) the
software.
 Types : Input,storage,processing,control, and output devices.

 Function: Hardware serve as the delivery system for software

solutions. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed, in
comparison with software and data, which are “soft” in the sense
that they are readily created, modified, or erased on the computer.

Hardware Vs Software

 Examples: CD-ROM, monitor, printer, video card, scanners ,

label makers, routers , and modems.

 Hardware wears out over time. Hardware is physical in nature.

Hardware Vs Software
4

Software:
 Collection of instructions that enables a user to interact with the
computer.
 Software is a program that enables a computer to perform a
specific task, as opposed to the physical components of the
system (hardware).
 Types: System software, Programming software, and Application
software.
 Examples: Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer , Microsoft Word ,
Microsoft Excel.

5

 Software does not wear out over time. However, bugs are
discovered in software as time passes.

Characteristics of Computer
6

 Basic characteristics about computer are:

 Speed: Computer can work very fast. It takes only few seconds for
calculations that we take hours to complete. Computers can perform millions
(1,000,000) of instructions and even more per second.

 Accuracy: The degree of accuracy of computer is very high and every

calculation is performed with the same accuracy. The errors in computer are
due to human and inaccurate data.

 Diligence: A computer is free from tiredness, lack of concentration, fatigue,

etc. It can work for hours without creating any error. If millions of calculations
are to be performed, a computer will perform every calculation with the same
accuracy. Due to this capability it overpowers human being in routine type of
work.

Characteristics of Computer
7

 Versatility: It means the capacity to perform completely different type of

work. You may use your computer to prepare payroll slips. Next moment you
may use it for inventory management or to prepare electric bills.

 Storage Capability: The Computer has an in-built memory where it can store
a large amount of data. You can also store data in secondary storage
devices such as floppies, which can be kept outside your computer and can be
carried to other computers.

speed
8

The computers process data at an

extremely fast rate, at millions of
instructions per second.

Work done at enormous speed as

compared to human beings

At present, a powerful computer can

perform billions of operations in
just one second

accuracy
9

Works with highest accuracy

Depends upon instructions and design of

computer

Errors occurs are most “Human Errors”

rather than “Technological Errors”

Examples of human errors are wrong

commands or incorrect data input

diligence
10

Free from “tiredness”

Free from “lack of concentration”

Speed and accuracy of first

calculation will be the same as
millionth calculation in the row

versatility
11

Can perform all kind of jobs simultaneously

Can do diverse nature of tasks like

calculation, graphics, searching etc at the
same time

Storage capability
12

Unlike human beings computer can store

tremendous amount of data

Computer can recall required data

even stored years before in no time

Loss or Deletion of data is done by

the user

reliability
13

It is the measurement of the performance of

a computer

It does not require any human intervention

between its processing operations

Definition of a computer
14

A computer is an electronic machine, devised for

performing calculations and controlling operations
that can be expressed either in logical or numerical
terms. [1]

An electronic device that processes data, converting it

into information that is useful to people. [2]

A computer is a programmable, multiuse machine that

accepts data – raw facts and figures – and processes
or manipulates it into information we can use. [3]

What computers don’t do?

17

A computer can only perform what it is

programmed to do.

Computers are unable to give any conclusion

without going through intermediate steps.

A computer can make plans based on

situation and information but it cannot
foresee whether they will succeed or not.
