INTRODUCTION

The wearable ECG monitoring system plays a crucial role in the

continuous tracking of heart health, allowing patients and
healthcare providers to monitor vital signs in real-time.
Electrocardiography (ECG) provides detailed insights into the
heart’s electrical activity and can help detect various cardiovascular
diseases.
The integration of FPGA technology and IoT enables the
development of compact, low-power, wearable ECG systems,
providing real-time, accurate heart health monitoring in both clinical
and home settings, improving accessibility and timely intervention.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Traditional ECG systems, though highly accurate, are typically limited

to hospitals or clinical environments, making continuous monitoring
and early detection of these conditions difficult. Patients with chronic
heart conditions or those at high risk need continuous ECG
monitoring, but the available systems are either bulky, expensive, or
require frequent hospital visits.
• This problem can be rectified by using FPGA
NOVELTY

• Real-time Signal Processing with FPGA : FPGA provides the

computational power to process ECG signals in real-time with
high accuracy, ensuring immediate detection of any
abnormalities.
• Wearable : The system is designed to be lightweight and
compact and easily portable.
• IoT connectivity : Allows the doctors to monitor the status of
the patient at all times.
OBJECTIVES

• Design a Wearable ECG System : Develop a lightweight, portable ECG

monitoring system that continuously measures the patient’s heart activity
in real-time.
• Real-Time ECG Signal Processing: Develop a signal processing unit which
filters, amplifies, and analyzes the ECG signals in real-time to detect
abnormalities and other heart conditions.
• Enable Remote Monitoring with IoT: To integrate IoT technology that allows
the system to wirelessly transmit ECG data to healthcare professionals.
• Provide Alerts and Early Detection: To implement an alarm system that
immediately notifies healthcare providers when irregularities or critical
events are detected in the ECG signal.
DESIGN OF STUDY

• FPGA Board used : ARTY 7

• Sensor used : ECG sensors are used to capture the ECG signals
• Filters : Amplifies and filters the ECG signals to reduce noise.
• FPGA Processor: Processes the ECG signals in real-time, applying
algorithms to detect key features like the QRS complex, heart rate, and
abnormal rhythms.
• The QRS complex is a significant part of an electrocardiogram (ECG)
waveform that represents the depolarization of the ventricles, which are
the heart's main pumping chambers. This depolarization is a critical
electrical event that leads to the contraction of the ventricles and the
pumping of blood to the lungs and the rest of the body.
Pan- Tompkins Algorithm:
• To find the QRS complex and heart rate accurately from the ECG sensor
values.
• It first removes the background noise and accentuates the frequency
content of this rapid cardiac depolarization.
• the signal is squared to enhance the QRS
contribution and facilitate the identification
of the QRS complex.
• Finally it locates the peaks of the filtered
signal using adaptive thresholds.
Depolarization of the ventricles
• It is the electrical process that triggers the
contraction of the heart’s ventricles, enabling
them to pump blood to the lungs (right
ventricle) and the rest of the body (left
ventricle).
• This process is essential for maintaining the
heart's rhythmic pumping function and is
represented by the QRS complex on an
electrocardiogram (ECG)

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

• Early detection of anomalies like irregular heartrates or other cardiac events,

• With the use of FPGA technology, the system will be optimized for low power
consumption, making it feasible for wearable applications. This will enable
patients to wear the device comfortably for long durations without frequent
battery charging.
• IoT connectivity will allow the ECG data to be transmitted in real-time to
healthcare providers or cloud servers for further analysis and long-term
storage. This enables remote monitoring and timely intervention in case of
critical health issues.
• The system will contribute to better patient care by providing physicians with
continuous and accurate data.
