QUALITIES OF A NEWS WRITER

• Aware • Must have a nose for a news


• Alert • Must not be afraid of people
• Can multitask • Must be able to finish the
article on time

INVERTED PYRAMID : • Most important part of the news.
• First sentence / paragraph that gives the
audience the most important details in a
LEAD story in the most concise, clear and
interesting way.

• Keep it simple - easy to understand

Before we move to the TYPES OF LEAD,
try making a news using the following
details :

LEAD
• Traditional lead
• Also known as summary lead
• Most common types of lead
• Give the summary of the story
• 5W1H
EXAMPLE A.

• Dahil sa kable ng isang christmas tree,


apat ang namatay kabilang ang isang
bata, sa isang sunog sa Brgy. 214 sa
Maynila kaninang madaling araw.
EXAMPLE B.

• Apat ang namatay kabilang ang isang


bata matapos masunog ang 100 na
bahay sa Maynila kaninang madaling
araw. Ang sanhi ng sunog : kable ng
Christmas tree.
2. Punch lead
• Uses short, forceful and catchy
statement that attracts the
readers attention before giving
the summary of the story.
EXAMPLE A.

Mag-ingat sa Christmas tree!


Apat ang namatay kabilang ang isang bata
sa isang sunog sa Maynila kaninang
madaling araw ng dahil sa pumutok sa
kable sa Christmas tree.
EXAMPLE B.

Hindi merry ang Christmas ngayong taon ng


maraming pamilya sa Barangay 214 sa
Maynila.
Dahil sa kable ng Christmas tree, 100 bahay
ang nasunog dito kaninang madaling araw,
apat ang patay kabilang ang isang bata.
3. Question lead
• Usually used when the person
you are interviewing is asking
something.
• Or if your story is answering a
question.
EXAMPLE A.

“Paano na ang aming pasko?”


Ito ang tanong ng mga taga Barangay 214 sa
Maynila matapos matupok ng apoy ang 100 na
bahay kaninang madaling araw dahil sa
pumutok na kable ng isang Christmas tree.
EXAMPLE B.

Kalikasan o kaunlaran?
Mainit ang komprontasyon kahapon ng mga
environmentalists at mga negosyante na
nagsusulong ng pagmimina sa isang rally na
ginanap kahapon sa Romblon.
4. Quotation lead
• Uses the exact quote/sentence
said by the person interviewed
or cover.
EXAMPLE A.

“How dare you!”


Mainit ang komprontasyon kahapon ng mga
environmentalists at mga negosyante na
nagsusulong ng pagmimina sa isang rally na
ginanap kahapon sa Romblon.
EXAMPLE B.

“Kayo ang boss ko.”


Ito ang pangako ni pangulong Noynoy Aquino sa
taumbayan sa kanyang pagsumpa bilang Pangulo ng
bansa noong lunes. Kasabay nito, ipinagbawal niya
ang pag gamit ng wang-wang at pagbigay ng special
treatment para sa mga polito at opisyal ng
gobyerno.

“I will get it done, no excuses from me.”


In his first address to Filipinos as the country’s
chief executive, President Marcos said he is
ready for the task ahead.

• One glance of the headline, the reader should

Important tips in news writing:
• In Filipino, start the news with a verb.
• In English, start the news with a subject, followed by a
verb.
• Avoid redundancy of words.
• Do not use ambiguous message or words.
• SPELL OUT EVERYTHING.
• Numbers of 9 and below should be spelled out, except for
date & address.
• 1-2 sentences is enough for a lead. 3 and above is too
much
• 3-4 paragraph news is enough . 5 and above is boring.
