OBEJCTIVE:
At end of the lesson , the students ,must be
able to:
• define functions and related terms;
• determine if the given relation represents a
function:
• define piece wise function:and
• represent real life situations using
functions, including piece wise function.
Relation and Function
Relation and Function
Relation
A relation is any set of ordered pair.
A relation is a relationship between sets of values.
In math, the relation is between the x-values and y-values of ordered
pairs. The set of all x-values is called the domain, and the set of all y-
values is called the range.

(−1 , 3) (2 , −5)
DOMAIN -- First Element in
the ordered pair

RANGE - Second element in the ordered pair

{ (1,4),(2,5),(3,6),(4,8) }

DOMAIN ( INPUT) RANGE ( OUTPUT)

Set of all X values Set of all Y values
{ 1,2,3,4 } { 4,5,6,8 }
Example of Relation
1. { (1,4),(2,5),(3,6),(4,8) }
2. { (2,4),(4,-2),(9,3),(9,3) }
3. { (1,a),(1,-b),(1,c),(1,d) }
4. A jeeppney and its plate number.
5. A student and his ID number.
6. A pen the color its ink.
4 Types of Relation
4 Types of Relation
1. ONE TO ONE
A relation A B is said to be
one to one if no two elements A
have the same image in B.
4 Types of Relation
2. ONE TO MANY
A relation is said to be one to
many relation if an elements A
is related to two or more
element of B.
4 Types of Relation
3. MANY TO ONE
A relation is said to be many to
one relation if two or more
elements of A are related to B.
4 Types of Relation
4. MANY TO MANY
A relation is said to be many to
many relation if two or more
elements in A cannot be
matched with two elements in
B.

Is a relation in which each element of the domain is
paired with exactly one element of the range.

Vertical Line Test
A graph of a mathematical relation is a function if any vertical line
drawn passing through the graph intersect the graph at exactly one
point

If a vertical line intersects the graph at more than one point,

then the graph is not a function.
