DATA,

INFORMATION
, KNOWLEDGE

Gleb Nazarenko
Introduction

- This presentation will focus on the topic of data

management and the definitions of data, information,
and knowledge.
Data

- Data is defined as individual facts

that are out of context, have no
meaning, and are difficult to
understand. It is important to
note that the term "data" is
plural, while "datum" is singular.
However, data in context are
individual facts that have
meaning and can be readily
understood.
Information

- Information is a set of data in

context with relevance to one
or more people at a point in
time or for a period of time. It
is crucial to understand that
information must have
relevance and a time frame
to be considered as such.
Knowledge

- Knowledge is defined as cognizance, cognition, the fact

or condition of knowing something with familiarity
gained through experience or association. Knowledge is
information that has been retained with an
understanding of the significance of that information.
There is a distinction between tacit knowledge, which is
knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person,
and explicit knowledge, which can be easily articulated.
Organization
al knowledge

- Organizational knowledge
refers to information that is of
significance to the
organization, is combined with
experience and understanding,
and is retained by the
organization. It is a rational
interpretation of information
that leads to business
intelligence.
Knowledge
managemen
t
- Knowledge management is an
integrated approach to
identifying, sharing, and
evaluating the organization's
information. It involves the
management of an environment
where people generate tacit
knowledge, render it into explicit
knowledge, and feed it back to
the organization.
Misperceptions of - Raw data are wrapped with
meaning to become data in
information context, which can become
either relevant or non-relevant
information. There are
misperceptions of information
that need to be discussed.
Relevant and
non-relevant
information
- Only relevant information leads to knowledge, while
non-relevant information does not. It is important to
understand that data in context may not be relevant or
timely to one person, but could be relevant and timely
to another person.
Conclusion

- In conclusion, we have reviewed the definitions of

data, information, and knowledge. It is important
to use these terms correctly in data management.
The audience is encouraged to consider their own
data management practices.
