Acknowledgement
I would like to thank my teacher, Mrs. Shahida Iqbal for giving
me an opportunity to prepare a report on “Sustainable
Development”.

I would like to express my gratitude towards my parents &

friends for their kind co-operation and encouragement which
helped me in the completion of this project.

This project has helped me in doing a lot of research and I

learned about many new things. I have learned that living
sustainably means realizing that small choices can have a big
impact on the environment.

02 Case Study,
The Three Copenhagen,
Factors
What is Sustainable
Development?
Sustainable development is a way of using resources and managing
economic growth to meet the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. So growth must be accomplished by contemplating
environmental protection, economic success and social equity.

Sustainable development also means that resources should be properly

distributed so that every person, especially the poor, can meet their
basic needs. It also aims to reduce inequality.

In sustainable development, technological progress should be input-

efficient and not input-consuming, i.e. the rate at which we use
resources should not exceed its renewal rate.
The Three Factors
We should keep three things in mind to achieve sustainable
development:

Climate and Environment – We have many natural

ecosystems that must be in balance for us to live. The
climate system is one of those. When we emit harmful
greenhouse gases like CO2 we clog the atmosphere, this
changes the temperatures on Earth which again affects
our development. Water, wind and the Sun will always be
there. Using the lasting sources of energy that renew
themselves is good for the planet and can provide jobs for
years to come.

Economic development – Almost everything we buy,

develop and trade starts with nature. The smarter we
use our natural resources and the better systems we
create for a fair distribution the more sustainable we
are. One way to contribute to a more even
distribution is to be more aware of what we buy and
how it is produced.
Social progress – We humans are a part of nature but
we’re also important resources for the world. For us
to be the best versions of ourselves certain things
must be in order like having equal opportunities to
education, healthcare, food and security. This
provides greater opportunities for us as human
beings but also for the planet.

These three must work together. That is sustainable

development. And there is a plan for this. All the
countries of the United Nations have come together
and have agreed on a joint plan for sustainable
development called the Sustainable Development
Goals.
The sustainable development goals are a universal call to action that unites
193 countries around the world. If these global goals are fulfilled by 2030 life
on Earth will be better for everyone. So what are these goals?

In September 2015, during the conference in New York, the UN showcased

the blueprint to achieve a better and sustainable future for all – the
Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169
targets.

17 It is important for everyone to
be involved and to build
partnerships for achieving
sustainable development goals
Case Study: Copenhagen
The world’s most sustainable city
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is renowned for its sustainable city planning initiatives
that prioritise environmental friendliness, livability and innovation. The city has implemented
various strategies to promote a bike-friendly infrastructure and green initiatives, making it a
global leader in sustainable transportation.
Copenhagen’s
bikes
Copenhagen’s bike infrastructure is world-famous. In
the last 10 years, it has invested nearly 300 million
dollars to improve biking infrastructure. As a result,
there are more than five times the number of bikes
than cars in the city.

64% of the citizens use

bikes for daily
transportation.
Copenhill
The Copenhill project is a remarkable example of how urban infrastructure
can be repurposed to serve multiple functions. Skiing down the slope while
70 tons of trash is burned below every hour. As a waste-to-energy plant, it
efficiently converts waste into electricity.

Each day 300 trucks arrive loaded with trash, which the plant uses to create
electricity and heat. However, it goes beyond its primary purpose by
integrating a recreational facility into its design. With a

ski hiking trails and climbing

slope, walls,
Copenhill provides residents and visitors opportunities for outdoor activities.
Conclusion
Sustainable development is a path to a brighter, cleaner and
more equitable future. By adopting sustainable practices in our
daily lives and supporting policies that prioritize the
environment, we can contribute to a more balanced and
harmonious world. Thank you.
