QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE

CHAIN RULE
Direct Proportion:
Two quantities are said to be
directly proportional, if on the increase (or
decrease) of the one, the other increases (or
decreases) to the same extent.
Eg. Cost is directly proportional to the number
of articles.
(More Articles, More Cost)
Indirect Proportion:
Two quantities are said to be
indirectly proportional, if on the increase of
the one, the other decreases to the same
extent
Eg. The time taken by a car is covering a
certain distance is inversely proportional to
the speed of the car. (More speed, Less is the
time taken to cover a distance.)
1.If the cost of x metres of wire is d rupees,
then what is the cost of y metres of wire at
the same rate?
Solution:
Cost of x metres = Rs d
Cost of 1 metre = Rs(d/x)
Cost of y metres = Rs(d/x) . y =Rs (yd/x)
2. In a camp, there is a meal for 120 men or 200
children. If 150 children have taken the meal,
how many men will be catered to with remaining
meal?
Solution:
There is a meal for 200 children. 150 children
have taken the meal.
Remaining meal is to be catered to 50 children.
Now, 200 children = 120 men.
50 children (120/200)x 50= 30 men.
3. If a quarter kg of potato costs 60 paisa, how many
paisa will 200 gm cost?
Solution:
Let the required weight be x kg.
Less weight, Less cost (Direct Proportion)
weight cost
250 60
200 ?
250 x x = (200 x 60)
x=(200 x 60)/250
x = 48.
4. In a dairy farm, 40 cows eat 40 bags of husk
in 40 days. In how many days one cow will
eat one bag of husk?
Solution:
Let the required number of days be y.
1 x 40 x y = 40 x 1 x 40
y = 40 days.
5. If 7 spiders make 7 webs in 7 days, then 1
spider will make 1 web in how many days?
Solution:
Let the required number days be y.
1x7xy=7x1x7
y = 7 days.
6. 3 pumps, working 8 hours a day, can empty a tank in 2
days. How many hours a day must 4 pumps work to
empty the tank in 1 day?
Solution:
Let the required number of working hours per day be x.
Indirect Proportion
Pumps Hrs Days
3 8 2
4 ? 1
4x1xx=3x2x8
x =(3 x 2 x 8)/4
x = 12.
7. 39 persons can repair a road in 12 days, working 5 hours a
day. In how many days will 30 persons, working 6 hours a
day, complete the work?
Solution:
Let the required number of days be x. Indirect Proportion
men hrs days
39 5 12
30 6 ?

30 x 6 x x = 39 x 5 x 12
x =(39 x 5 x 12)(30 x 6)
x = 13.
8.If 20 men can build a wall 56 meters long in 6 days ,
what length of a similar wall can be built by 35 men
in 3 days?
Solution:
Let the required length be x meters, Indirect
Proportion
men days metres
20 6 56
35 3 ?
=> (20 x 6 x 56)=(35 x 3 x x)
=> x = 64
Hence, the required length is 64m.
9.36 men can complete a piece of work in 18 days. In how
many days will 27 men complete the same work ?
Solution:
Let the number of days be x then, Indirect Proportion
men days
36 18
27 ?

27 : 36 :: 18 : x
=>27x = 36 * 18
=> x = 24
So 24 days will be required to get work done by 27 men.
10. If 36 men can do a piece of work in 25 hours, in how many hours will15
men do it?
Solution:
Let the required no of hours be x. Then
men hrs
36 25
15 ?

Therefore, 15:36 ::25:x

=> (15 x X)=(36 x 25) => x = 60

Hence, 15 men can do it in 60 hours.

11. If 8 men can reap 80 hectares in 24 days , then
how many hectares can 36 men reap in 30 days?
Solution:
Let the required no of hectares be x. Direct
Proportion
men hectare days
8 80 24
36 ? 30
=> ( 8 * 24 * x) = (36 * 30 * 80)
=> x= 450
12. If the Price of 6 toys is Rs. 264.37, What
will be the approximate price of 5 toys?
Solution:
Let the required Price be Rs. X . (Direct
Proportion)
Therefore 6 : 5 :: 264.37 : x
=> 6 * x = 5 * 264.37
=> X= 220.308
Therefore, Approximate price of 5 toys =
Rs. 220
13.If the price of 23 toys is 276, then what will
the price of 12 toys ?
Solution:
Less toys, Less Price (Direct Proportion)
So, let the price be Rs. x
then, 23:12::276:x
=> x=(276*12)/23
=> x=144
So price of 12 toys will be Rs. 144
14. If 20 men can build a wall 56 meters long in 6 days ,
what length of a similar wall can be built by 35 men in
3 days?
Solution:
Let the required length be x meters
men meter days
20 56 6
35 ? 3

=> (20 x X x 6)=(35 x 3 x 56)

=> x = 49
Hence, the required length is 49 m.
15.If 18 binders bind 900 books in 10 days , How
many binders will be required to bind 600 books
in 12 days?
Solution:
Let the required no of binders be X.
binder books days
18 900 10
? 600 12
Therefore, (18 * 900 * 10) = (600 * 12 * X)
=> x = 25
16. An industrial loom weaves 0.128 metres of cloth
every second. Approximately, how many seconds
will it take for the loom to weave 25 metre of cloth ?
Solution:
Let the time required by x seconds.
Then, More cloth means More time
(Direct Proportion)
So, 0.128 : 1 :: 25 : x
⇒x=(1×25)/0.128
=> x = 195.31
So time will be approx 195 seconds
17. If a person having Rs. 2000 and he want to
distribute this to his five children in the manner that
each son having Rs. 30 more than the younger one ,
what will be the share of youngest child ?
Solution:
Assume first child (the youngest) get = Rs. X
Total amount they got = Rs. 2000
x + (x+30) + (x+60) + (x+90) + (x+120) = 2000
5x + 300 = 2000
5x = 1700
x = Rs. 340
So the youngest child will get Rs. 340.
PROBABILITY
1. Find the probability of ‘getting 3 on
rolling a die’.
Solution:
Sample Space = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Number of favourable event = 1
i.e. {3}
Total number of outcomes = 6
Thus, Probability, P = 1/6
2.Two dice are rolled, find the probability
that the sum is:
i)equal to 1 ii)equal to 4 iii)less than 13
Solution:
S = { (1,1),(1,2),(1,3),(1,4),(1,5),(1,6)
(2,1),(2,2),(2,3),(2,4),(2,5),(2,6)
(3,1),(3,2),(3,3),(3,4),(3,5),(3,6)

(5,1),(5,2),(5,3),(5,4),(5,5),(5,6)
(6,1),(6,2),(6,3),(6,4),(6,5),(6,6) }
i) Equal to 1
P(E) = n(E) / n(S) = 0 / 36 = 0

ii)Equal to 4
Three possible outcomes give a sum equal to 4 they
are:
E = {(1,3),(2,2),(3,1)}
Hence, P(E) = n(E) / n(S) = 3 / 36 = 1 / 12

iii) Less than 13

P(E) = n(E) / n(S) = 36 / 36 = 1
3.Two cards are drawn together from a pack of
52 cards. The probability that one is a spade
and one is a heart, is:
Solution:
Then, n(S) = 52C2 =(52 x 51)/(2×1)
= 1326
(13C1 x C1)
13
= (13 x 13)= 169.
P(E) =169/1326
=13/102
