Relations
⫸ A relation is a set of ordered pairs where the variables and are related according to
some pattern (equation)
⫸ The value is the input we choose and the value is the output we receive from the
equation
⫸ We can describe relations
A as a set of values (List
B A) that map (correspond to) a set of
values (List B):
1 1
From this mapping. We
2 2 can see if we input an
value of 1 we receive
3 3 an output of value 4
4 4
5 5
Types of relations
⫸ There are four types of relations depending the mapping:
One-to-one
⫸ Every input corresponds to exactly one output
⫸ Each number has its own unique match

One-to-many
⫸ An input corresponds with two or more outputs
⫸ E.g. 5 in Set A matches with 5 and 8 in Set B
Many-to-one
⫸ Two or more inputs correspond to the same output
⫸ E.g. 4, 6 and 7 in Set A match with 5 in Set B

Many-to-many
⫸ Two or more inputs correspond with two or more
outputs
Vertical & Horizontal line test
⫸ There is a simple visual way to test if a graph is a function or not:
⫸ The vertical line test
⫸ If a graph passes the vertical line test it is a function

⫸ There is also the horizontal line test

⫸ This will help us with describing what type of relation
a graph is
Passes Fails
Function! Not a Function!

Type of Relation Vertical line test Horizontal line test

One-to-one Passes ( a function) Passes
Many-to-one Passes ( a function) Fails
One-to-many Fails ( not a function) Passes
Many-to-many Fails ( not a function) Fails
What is a function?
⫸ A function is a special type of relation where for every (input) there is a unique
(only one) value of (output)

Functio
n

⫸ The variable is called the independent variable

⫸ The variable is called the dependent variable, since it depends on
