EVALUATING
FUNCTIONS
Evaluating function is the
process of determining the
value of the function at the
number assigned to a
given variable.
STRATEGY IN
EVALUATING FUNCTIONS

1. Write the given function.

2. Substitute the given value to the assigned variable.
3. Simplify your answer. Apply PEMDAS rule.
• Using calculator is discouraged.
4. In expressing your final answer when dealing with fractions:
• As much as possible, express your answer as a fraction in
simplest form (not in decimal), unless the given function or the
given value is already in decimal form.
5. Box your final answer.
EXAMPLE 1
1) Given , find the value of the function if x=3.
EXAMPLE 2
2) Given , find the value of the function if .
EXAMPLE 3
3) Evaluate the function where x is the greatest integer
function given .
EXAMPLE 4
4) Evaluate if .

; Recall: To transform an exponential expression into

a radical expression, let the numerator be the
exponent of the base, and denominator be the

( 3
2 ) =√ index.
