Increments
The Net change in the coordinates of a
point is
called increment.
has the same value for every choice of the points P1(x1,
y1) & P2(x2, y2) on the line.
Slope
DEFINITION:
rise y y2 y1
The constant m
run x x2 x1
is the slope of the nonvertical line P1P2.
• The slope tells us the direction (uphill, downhill) and
steepness of a line.
• A line with positive slope rises uphill to the right; one with
negative slope falls downhill to the right.
• The greater the absolute value of the slope, the more rapid
the rise or fall.
• The slope of a vertical line is undefined. Since the run ∆x
is zero for a vertical line, we can’t find the ratio m.
Point-Slope Equation of
Line
• The equation of a straight line
passing through point (x1, y1)
having slope m is given by
y y1 m(x x1 )
