Modal Verbs/Modals
 give additional information about the
function of the main verb that follows it.

Ex.: I will help you.


(Modal) (Main Verb)

●Modals have the following features in


common: (a) they are always followed by
the base form of the verb; (b) they are the
same for all pronouns; and (c) they do not
need auxiliaries.
 The boy can play baseball.
 The boy will play baseball.
 The boy should play baseball.
 The boy may play baseball.
 The boy must play baseball.
Examples of
Modals
1. Can
 It expresses ability
 I can drive a car.
 Lily can play Chopin’s “Nocturne Op. 9” on piano.
 It expresses possibility
 Smoking can cause cancer.
 It asks permission

2. Could
 It expresses ability
 I could drive a car when I was young.
 Lily could play Chopin’s “Nocturne Op. 9” on piano during her high school days.

 It expresses possibility
 Luckily you stopped! Smoking could cause cancer.

3. May
 It expresses possibility
 We may go to New York.
 She may be late tomorrow.
 Is used to ask permission
 May I sit next to you?
 May I go to the restroom?
 It expresses wish
 May all your wishes come true.
4. Might
 It expresses probability
 We might go to New York.
 It might rain later.
5. Will
 It expresses action that will happen in the future
 I will audition for the antagonist’s role in our coming school play.
 It expresses decision
 I will go and see what is happening.
 It expresses request
 Will you copy these files?
 It expresses promises and predictions
 I will always remember you.
6. Would
 It is used for a future action but is no longer in the future now
 Mark said that he would finish the documents next week.
 Used for asking questions, it is more polite than using will
 Would you like some apple juice?
 Expresses unreal conditions
 If I were the judge, I would convict them.
7. Shall
 Used to express ideas related to specific rules or law
 Kids shall not enter this room.
 Used to express things that will happen in the future
 We shall be here at 10 pm.
8. Should
 It expresses personal opinion or to advise someone
 You should call the police.
 Used to express desire that something happened in the past
but it did not occur
 Gabriel should have tried it.
 Used to indicate obligation and duty
 You should wear your seatbelt.
9. Ought to
 It expresses probability
 Prices of oil are ought to come down soon.

 It expresses moral obligation


 We ought to respect the elders.
10. Must
 It expresses necessity
 You must improve your hand-writing.
 It expresses strong obligation
 The tenant must pay the agreed amount on the first day of every month.
 Logical certainty
 Living in such crowded conditions must be difficult.
