3 OPERATING SYSTEMS
CHAPTER 1 – TYPES AND COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS
SYLLABUS OBJECTIVES

 List characteristics of operating systems including:

 Command Line Interface (CLI)
 Graphical User Interface (GUI)
 Dialogue based and gesture-based interface
 Discuss the differences between types of operating systems
 Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the different
types of operating systems
SUCCESS CRITERIA:

You Must: Be able to list the differences between CLI and

GUI

You Should: Recognize the uses of an Operating

system and identify the UI required in a given
scenario

You Could: Explain the features of WIMP and post-

OPERATING SYSTEM
 They are special software that enables users to
communicate with computer systems
 Examples of OS : Windows 10, Windows Vista, Linux, iOS,
Android
 The tasks of an OS include :
1. Controlling the operation of the input, output and backing storage
devices
2. Supervising the loading, running and storage of application programs
3. Dealing with errors that occur in application programs
4. Maintaining security of the whole system
5. Maintaining a computer log
6. Allowing communication between user and computer system
Role of an Operating System

An operating system is a system software that manages the general operation of a

computer system:

UI (USER INTERFACE)

 UIs are used for communication between computer system

and users
 There are 4 types of UIs
COMMAND LINE INTERFACES
 They requires users to type in instructions
to communicate with the computer
system
 The users have to learn the instructions
required to type in for various operations
such as opening menus/software etc.
 This is a slow process, and also requires
complex code for the most basic functions
 The advantage is that the user has direct
communication with the computer system
and is not limited to a number of pre-
determined options
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACES

 GUIs allow users to interact with computer systems using pictures or

symbols (icons)
 The most common GUI is WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menu and Pointing
device) which was developed for PCs

• GUIs are quite easy to use due to the
visual nature of the interface WIMP
• The user has lots of visual clues as to what
things do.
In recent years, devices such as touch screen smartphones and tablets use post-WIMP
interaction, where fingers are in contact with the screen allowing actions such as pinching
and rotating, which would be difficult to do using a single pointer and device such as a
mouse.

GESTURE-BASED INTERFACES
Gesture-based interfaces rely on human interaction by the moving of hands, head or even
the feet. Gesture recognition allows humans to interface with a computer in a more natural
fashion without the need for any mechanical devices. This type of interface uses
techniques known as computer vision and image processing.
