FUNDAMENTAL OF BASIC
MOVEMENTS
A. Locomotor Movements- refers to
body movements that move the body
from one place to another.
Examples:
1. Walking- is a simple transfer of body
weight from one foot to another with one
foot always in contact with the floor.

2. Running- a transfer of body
weight but is faster than walking.
It is considered as a fast walk.
3. Hopping- a spring from one
foot landing on the same foot.

4. Jumping- a spring from one
foot landing on both.
5. Leaping- a spring from one
foot landing on the other foot
in any direction.

6. Skipping- a step and a hop
done at the same time.
7. Sliding- a glide followed by
a quick close of the other foot.

B. Non-locomotor Movements-
these are performed without
appreciable movement from one
place to another.
Examples:
1. Swaying

are dance practices that have been
passed on or handed down from one
generation to another.

“Saludo”- Partner bow to each other, to
the audience, opposite dancers, or to the
neighbors and this is used in all Philippine
dances.
Set – A dance formation like a square or a
unit formation composed of two or more
pairs.

Slide – To glide foot smoothly along the
floor. The movement may be finished with
or without transfer of weight.
Stamp – To bring down foot forcibly and
noisily on the floor (like doing a heavy
step) with or without transfer of weight.

Arms in Lateral Position – both arms are
at one side, sideward right or left. This may
be done at shoulder, chest or waist level.
Arms in Reverse “T” Position – arms are
side horizontal, elbows bent at right angles,
forearm parallel to heal, palms forward or
facing inward, fist loosely closed.

Kumintang – Moving the hand from wrist
either clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
Hayon-Hayon – To place forearm in front and
the other at the back of the waist.
Salok – To swing the arm downward-upward to
fifth position passing in front of the body as it
scooping. The trunk is bent forward following
the movement of the arm.
