COMPOSITION OF

FUNCTIONS
OBJBBBBBBBBbjE
At the end of theCTIvVES
lesson the students must be
able to
a. define composition of functions;
b. performs composition of functions;and
c. evaluates functional problems using
composition of functions.
DEFINITION
-Operation of function that must have two
functions namely f(x) and g(x), and then perform
the indicated operations to produce the result
h(x).
“substituting one function into another function”
“applying a function to the other function”
EXAMPLE
𝑓 (𝑥)=3 𝑥−1;𝑔(𝑥)=𝑥+4 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑( 𝑓 ∘𝑔)(𝑥).
Since f(x)
EXAMPLE
2
𝑓 (𝑥)=𝑥 −6 ;𝑔(𝑥)=𝑥+3 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑( 𝑓 ∘𝑔)(𝑥).
Since f(x)
Exercise!
1.¿ 𝑓 (𝑥)=𝑥+3;𝑔(𝑥)=𝑥−9.𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑(𝑓 ∘𝑔)(𝑥).
2.¿ 𝑓 (𝑥)=2𝑥+4;𝑔(𝑥)=3𝑥 −8. 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑(𝑓 ∘𝑔)(𝑥).
EXAMPLE
𝑓 (𝑥)=4 𝑥+ 3 𝑔(𝑥)=𝑥 − 2. 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑓 (𝑔 (5)).
EXAMPLE
QUESTIONS?
How do we perform
the composition of
functions ?
Step 1: Substitute the
function into another
function.

Step 2: Perform the

indicated operations or
Simplify.
