POWER

Power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transformed into an electrical circuit and measured
using the SI unit of power which is watt or one joule per second.
P=√3 x V x I x cos Ø

Power system is classified into three main portions which include:

Generation
Transmission
Distribution
Ring Main Unit (RMU) is employed in secondary distribution network which provides a
continuous power supply to the customer by shifting sources in event of any emergency or
repair on the primary source.

MDB (Main Distribution Board)

primary distribution point where power from the main source is distributed to subsidiary circuits or distribution boards within a building or
facility
include components like large circuit breakers or fuses for incoming power distribution and may include other components like meters,
busbars, and surge protection devices.

SMDB (Sub-Main Distribution Board)

receive power from the MDB and distribute it to smaller branch circuits within specific areas or zones of a building.
often located on each floor or in separate sections of a building to manage power distribution more efficiently.

EMDB (Essential Main Distribution Board)

used in installations where there is a need to provide power to essential or critical loads during emergencies or power outages. Essential loads
might include lighting for emergency exits, fire alarm systems, or other safety-critical equipment.

DB (Distribution Board)
generic term for any panel or enclosure used to distribute electrical power to multiple circuits within a building or facility.
DBs can come in various sizes and configurations depending on the specific requirements of the installation.

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is a device that automatically transfers a power supply from its primary source to a backup source when it
senses a failure or outage in the primary source.

SOCKET
A socket(outlet or receptacle) is a device installed in walls or electrical boxes to provide
point of connection for electrical appliances and devices.

TYPE OF CONNECTION
Radial circuit :
Radial circuit is a circuit in which the circuit loop starts from DB and ends to the final
socket. MCB Rating is 20A.
Example : 5 no’s 13A single sockets, 2 no’s 13A Twin sockets
Ring circuit :
Ring circuit is a circuit in which the circuit loop starts from DB , ends to the final socket
and from final socket return loop goes to DB which forms a closed circuit. MCB rating is 32A.
Example : 10 no’s 13A single sockets, 5 no’s 13A Twin sockets

1) ELCB rating provided in DB for power circuit is 30mA

2) Wire size for power circuit is 4 sq.mm
3) Diversity factor is 50%

NOTES:

No socket outlet shall be mounted with in 2 meters of any water tap, sing, or basin in the kitchen.

No socket outlet other than shaver socket outlet shall be installed inside a toilet or bath room.

Small power 13A switched socket outlets are generally mounted at 300 to 450mm above FFL.

All DP switches for water heater & A.C units shall be mounted at a height of1250mm above FFL.

Separate radial circuits are to be used for:

- socket outlets and fixed appliances in kitchen
- Electric water heaters,
- Air-conditioning units
- cooker control units
- power supply to any fire alarm/ protection panels
