CHAPTER 1
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Internet usage involves accessing the internet for learning, information,

communication, and entertainment. It offers quick access to knowledge, supports online

education, and is widely used by students, professionals, and healthcare workers. While it

provides many benefits, it can also impact psychological well-being, potentially leading to

issues like social anxiety and loneliness. Overall, internet usage is a key part of modern

life (Antonijevic, 2018).

1.1 INTRODUCTION
A study conducted by Patel and Darbar (2016) on internet usage among

students of CK Shah Vijapurwala Institute of Management Library, India

revealed 100% of the respondents use the internet and majorly for their studies

and social networking. More than half of the students were satisfied with the

WIFI access on their campus and a major problem to internet use is the low

speed internet connectivity.

1.1 INTRODUCTION
Similarly, Kumar (2017) using a survey studied the internet access and

use among face-to-face program students of Indira Gandhi National Open

University, India. The study revealed majority of the respondents use the

internet for academic purposes and social networking. The respondents also

reported that the internet improved their professional competence and

improved their research process.

1.1 INTRODUCTION
In the Philippines, not all students are able to study remotely. Various

learning modes provide students with different options for achieving their

learning objectives. In the context of online learning, the current study

will attempt to analyze the level of online fatigue, problematic internet

usage perception of learning effectiveness (Ching et al., 2023).

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Hence, this study aims to determine the impact of internet usage on

the academic performance of the grade 11 students. It helps teachers and

schools enhance digital learning environment and address any challenges

related to the internet access and use it to grade 11 students in bunawan

national high school.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to determine the impact

of internet usage on academic performance
among Grade 11 Students.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the
following question;
1.What is the profile of the respondent in terms
of:
1.1 age, and
1.2 sex?
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

2. What is the satisfaction level of the internet

usage on academic performance among grade
11 students?
2.1 academic performance;
2.2 gaming;
2.3 social networking;
2.4 entertainment; and
2.5 news?
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

3. Is there a significant difference between the

impact of internet usage on academic

performance among grade 11 students and their

profile?
1.3 METHODOLOGY
1.4 Research Design
The research will be utilizing descriptive correlational design, for

which data will be collected through descriptive correlational questionnaire to

assess the impact of Internet Usage on Academic Performance among Grade 11

Students and consequently to examine any significant relationship between

these main variables and to determine any significant relationship in internet

usage based on the respondents’ characteristics: age, and sex.

1.5 Respondents of the Study

The participants of this study will be the Grade 11

Students of the Bunawan National High School, Bunawan,

Agusan del Sur. The sample size will be calculated using

Slovin’s Formula with a margin of error of 5%.

1.6 Setting of the Study
The study will be
conducted on Semester of S.Y.
2024-2025, from October
2024 to May 2025.
1.7 Research Instrument
The research instrument will be used is a revised questionnaire

titled “Impact of Internet Usage on Academic Performance among

Grade 11 Students” by Comora et al. (2019). Items will be revised in

order to suit to the condition of the study. When revision is done the

instrument will be given to expert validators to ensure that it is reliable.

1.7 Research Instrument
The survey questionnaire will be divided into two parts. The first

section which contains the demographic profile of the respondents like

age, and sex; and the second section contains the impact of Internet Usage

on Academic Performance among Grade 11 Students mainly Academic

Performance, Gaming, Social Networking, Entertainment, and News.

1.8 Data Analysis

Descriptive statistics will be used in presenting information received

from the study in order to describe the characteristics of information of

samples by using frequency, percentage, mean and pearson r-coefficient.

Frequency and percentage will be used to determine the profile of

students in terms of age, and sex.

1.8 Data Analysis
Furthermore, mean will be used to determine the impact of internet usage on

academic performance among Grade 11 Students in the following areas: electronic

media factor, family factor, school climate factor, student factor and teacher factor.

Pearson-r coefficient will be used to identify if there is a significant

relationship on the impact of internet usage on academic performance among Grade

11 Students, when ratings are classified according to their profile.
