Color

• Color is the
perceptual
quality of light.

• The human eye

can distinguish
almost ten
million colors.
Primary Colors of Light:
Red, Green, Blue-combine to white

Secondary colors of Light:
cyan, magenta, and yellow-
also combine to white.

Activity 1
Draw and color the rainbow on a
separate sheet of paper using
your coloring materials based on
how well you remember how a
rainbow looks like.
What does the
arrangement of colors of
light exhibit in terms of
energy?
Which color of light has the greatest
energy?
Why do we see the colors of
the rainbow?
are the result of light being split
into its various individual
wavelengths. This gives us a
spectrum of colors that range from
the shorter blue and violet
wavelengths through to the longer
red wavelengths.
Why is the sky blue?
because it's the blue
light that gets
scattered the most.
It's redirected into
many different
directions all over the
sky, whereas the other
wavelengths aren't
scattered as much.
Why is the ocean
sometimes blue, gray or
green?
Even if water was not blue, it would appear
that color because of its index of refraction,
compared to air. Blue light travels further
through water than green, yellow, orange,
or red light.
The salts, particles, and organic matter in
the ocean affect its color. Sometimes this
makes the water more blue, but it also
turns some oceans green, red, or yellow.
Light
is a kind of energy
that can travel through
space in a form of
wave.
Light
from the sun or
flashlights looks white, but
it is really a mixture of
many colors.
Light
the colors in white
light are ROYGBIV
Light
We highlight here the
arrangement of colors of
light as ROYGBIV when
dispersion happens.
Dispersion
is a kind of refraction which
provided us colors of light. This
phenomenon is observed when
white light passes through a
prism.
Frequency of light wave – refers to
the number of waves that move past a
certain point in one second.

Frequency – generally measured in

Hertz, the units of cycles per second.
Take note:
•The more energy in the wave, the (higher OR lower) its
frequency.
•The lower the frequency is, the (more OR less) energy in the
wave.
•When it comes to light waves, violet has the (highest OR lowest)
energy while red has the (highest OR lowest) energy.
•Within the band of visible light, the (shortest OR longest)
wavelength is violet and the (shortest OR longest) wavelength is
red.

4. lower
5. red
6. orange
7. yellow
8. green
9. blue
10. violet
Modified True or False
Write TRUE if the statement is correct but if it is false, change the
underlined word to make the whole statement correct. Write your answers
on separate sheet of paper.
1. Red has the greatest refractive index among the seven colors.
2. Violet has the lowest refractive index among them.
3. Red is the least bent color among them.
4. Violet is the most bent color among them.

5. The greater the refractive index of the color of light, the more

bending is observed.

Primary Colors of Light

• A complementary color is formed by
subtracting a primary color from
white light.

• Every secondary color is the

complement of a primary color.
If a blue and yellow
flashlight strike a white
object at the same time,
what color will the object
appear?
If red is subtracted from
white, what color remains?
What color will a blue ball
appear if a red light only
strikes it and why?

Primary Colors of Pigment
(Cyan, Yellow, Magenta combine
to give Black color pigment)
Color of light is an additive
process with respect to
frequency. Why?

• The primary colors when added

together give white light.
Additive Color of Light
Mixing Applications

• Movie film
• Slide projector
• Television and computer displays
Notes
• The primary colors of pigment are
the secondary colors of light and vice
versa.
When magenta and cyan
pigments are mixed what
color results?
Pigment is a subtractive
color process. Why?

• Colors are formed by absorbing

(taking away) certain frequencies
from white light.
• The absence of a reflected light
wave appears as black color.
Applications: painting,
printing, etc.
