ABSTRACT

An intelligent transportation system (ITS) is an advanced application that aims to provide innovative services relating to
different modes of transport and traffic management and enable users to be better informed and make safer, more
coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks. The main goal is to enhance transportation efficiency, safety, and
environmental sustainability while improving overall mobility for people and goods.
This is an adaptation of transport sector to the concurrent digital era. It can vary in technologies applied, from basic
management systems such as car navigation; traffic signal control systems; container management systems; variable
message signs; automatic number plate recognition or speed cameras to monitor applications, such as security CCTV
systems, and automatic incident detection or stopped vehicle detection systems; to more advanced applications that
integrate live data and feedback from a number of other sources, such as parking guidance and information systems;
weather information etc. Paper describes the importance of use of ITS in both urban, suburban and rural areas.

3
WHAT IS I.T.S ?
• An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is an
innovative application that combines information and
communication technologies (ICT) with transportation
infrastructure.
• It is an integrated system of people, road and vehicle
which contribute to improve road safety and comfort
through smooth traffic.

WHY I.T.S IS NEEDED ?
1. Safety Enhancement:
ITS technologies improve road safety by enabling real-time
communication between vehicles (V2V) and infrastructure
(V2I).
This helps prevent accidents, manage traffic flow, and respon
d to emergencies more effectively
.

2. Efficient Traffic Management:

ITS optimizes traffic flow, reduces congestion, and minimizes
travel times. It achieves this through adaptive traffic signals,
dynamic route guidance, and incident management systems.
9
3. Data Collection and Analysis:
ITS gathers data from various sources (such as sensors,
weather stations, and satellite systems) to provide
accurate information on road conditions.
This data helps transportation agencies make informed d
ecisions and
plan infrastructure development.

4. Mobility Options:
By integrating public transit, ridesharing, and other
modes of transportation, ITS enhances mobility options
for travelers. It promotes seamless connectivity and
encourages the use of sustainable transport alternatives
10
5. Environmental Impact:
ITS contributes to environmental sustainability by
reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and overall
environmental impact. For instance, efficient traffic
management reduces idling time and fuel wastage.

6. LAND CONSUMPTION:
ITS aims to optimize the utilization of existing transport infrastructure.
