Differences between
Plant and Animal Cells
Animal Cell And Plant cell Illustration
This are few details about the difference of
animal and plant cell
What are the Differences Between Them?
ANIMAL CELL PLANT CELL
• Have no chloroplasts. • Have a cellulose cell wall outside the
• Simply have cell membrane, but no cell membrane.
cell wall • Have a cell membrane.
• Cytoplasm fills almost the entire cell. • Have cytoplasm.
• Have complex and prominent Golgi • Often have chloroplasts containing
apparatus. chlorophyll.
• Have only small vacuoles. • Have prominent one or more
• Often irregular in shape. vacuoles.
• Often regular in shape.
- Animal cells are mostly
round and irregular in
shape while plant cell have
fixed rectangular shapes.
Both plant and animal cells
are eukaryotic cells so they
have several features in
common.

- They both don’t have the

same organelles or they
don’t look exactly the
same since they each have
different needs.
Similarities of Plant and Animal Cells
1. Both plant and animal cells are
surrounded by a cell membrane
composed of lipids and proteins.

2. Membrane-bound nucleus is
present in 4 components:
- nuclear envelope
- nucleoplasm
- nucleolus
- chromatin fibers
3. Membrane-bound cell organelles like
mitochondria, Golgi body, endoplasmic
reticulum, and vacuoles are present in both
plants and animal cells.

4. 80s type of ribosomes are not present in

cell types. Ribosomes occur both freely in
the cytoplasm as well as they remain
attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.

5. Cytoskeleton is present in both plant and

animal cells.

6. Double-stranded helical DNA is present

in both cells.
Differences of Plant and Animal Cells
1. Cell walls and chloroplasts are present only
in plant cells and absent in the case of
animals.

2. In plant cells, large central vacuoles are

present but in animal cells, vacuoles are very
less in number and small in size.

3. Lysosomes, centrioles, and centrosomes

occur and are present in animal cells but
absent in plant cells.

4. In the case of animals, reserve food

materials glycogen whereas in plants it is
starch.
5. Photosynthesis occurs only in plant
cells containing chlorophyll but not in
animal cells

6. During cell division, spindle

formation takes place through
microtubules in a plant cell, but in an
animal cell, it takes place through
faster formation.

7. In plant cells, cytokinesis or the

division of the cell is the centrifugal
type and a cell plate is laid down in the
cytoplasm during division. Whereas in
an animal cell, cytokinesis is
centripetal type.
