Purposes of Nursing Research
Identification •Assess situations or the phenomena that need clarification and
solutions

•Aims to describe a phenomenon that relates to the nursing profession

Description •Observes, defines and documents nursing situation inquiry
•Determines the relationship between and among variables investigated

•Explores the phenomenon being investigated

Exploration •Answers “what” questions on the phenomenon for more precise and
accurate understanding

Explanation •Seeks clarification of a prevailing situation to answer questions that ask

“why” a phenomenon occurred

Prediction and •Prediction projects a situation or events that could arise from research
investigation
•Control puts a barrier to hinder or minimize the effects of anticipated
Control outcomes or reactions
