real conditional; unreal conditional? • How will you differentiate present real conditional from unreal conditional? UNREAL CONDITIONALS are classified into: a. Second Conditionals b. Third Conditionals PRESENT UNREAL/SECOND CONDITIONAL -is used to talk about what you would generally do in imaginary situations. Describe unreal imaginary scenarios. ECOND CONDITIONAL has two uses: A. We use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true. Examples: a. If I had enough money, I would buy a house with twenty bedrooms and a swimming pool. (I’m probably not going to have much money, it’s just a dream, not very real.) b. She would pass the examination if she ever studied. (She never studies, so this won’t happen.) ECOND CONDITIONAL has two uses: B. We use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it’s not true. Examples: a. If I had his number, I would call him. (I don’t have his number now, so it’s impossible for me to call him.) b. If I were you, I wouldn’t go out with that man. (but I’m not you,) Reminder The words "could," should," "might" and "ought to" include conditional, so you cannot combine them with "would." Examples: • If I had more time, I would could exercise after work. Not Correct • If I had more time, I could exercise after work. Correct • If he invited you, you really would should go. • Only the word "if" is used with the present unreal
conditional because you are discussing imaginary situations. "When" cannot be used. • Examples:
