Digital Voltmeter

(DVM)

Represented by
K23ES010 and
K23ES023
Introduction
 Definition: A digital voltmeter is an electronic device
that measure the voltage Of a circuit or device and
display the reading in numerical digit on an LCD screen
 Function: Converts analog voltage to a digital number
and displays it in numerical form.
 Accuracy:Provides more precise measurements
compared to analog voltmeters.
 Usage: Commonly used in laboratories, industrial
applications, and electronic devices testing.
History of DVM

In 1954, Andrew Kay of Non-Linear systems who designed the

world's first digital voltmeter. Andrew Kay had received inspiration
for this idea whilst working for a company called Jack and Hernitz
and that inspiration came from the unlikeliest of sources. He had
seen the troubles plaguing unskilled production line workers who
cursed their fates because they had to use large analog voltmeters
to do the same thing. Furthermore, these workers were not good at
handling the readings of the voltage and messed up frequently by
way of blowing things up. Additionally, the large analog voltmeters
were very expensive and were not all that handy to use. This also
created room for logistical problems. The first digital voltmeter used
a mechanical chopper to switch between a resistive divider and a
stack of batteries
The first commercial digital voltmeter featured a four-digit
accurate display of the voltage offering readings that were
accurate to one decimal point.

Working operation of digital
voltmeter
1. Input Signals : This is the voltage that needs to be
measured
2. Pulse Generator : It is a voltage source . It uses both
analog and digital techniques to generate rectangular
pulse . The width and frequency of rectangular pulse
controlled by digital circuit inside the pulse generator
while amplitude and rise and fall of time is controlled by
Analog circuitry
3. AND GATE : This gate output a high signal only When
both of its inputs are high Combining a train pulse with a
rectangular pulse
4. It outputs train pulses that match the duration of
Decimal Display It counts the number of
impulses and hence the duration and display
the value of voltage LED or LCD display after
calibrating it
Applications of Digital
Voltmeter
 Laboratory Use: Measures accurate voltage levels
across components like resistors, diodes, and
capacitors in electronic circuits.
 Current Calculation: Helps determine unknown
current values by measuring voltage, allowing for
current calculation using Ohm's law.
 Verification: Employed in cathode ray tubes (CRTs)
to verify the accuracy of readings and findings,
essential for electrical maintenance and
inspection.
Applications of Digital
Voltmeter
 Power Measurement: Used in the three
ammeter method and the three voltmeter
method to measure power and calculate the
power factor of specific loads in circuits.
 CircuitDesign: Crucial for designing and
prototyping circuits, enabling measurement
and verification of voltage levels at every
stage of the design process.
Advantages
 High
Accuracy: Offers precise voltage
measurements.
 Easy to Read: Numerical display is easy to
read and interpret.
 Versatility: Can measure a wide range of
voltages.
 Durability:
Less prone to damage from over-
voltage compared to analog meters.
 Features: Often include additional functions
like data logging, min/max readings, etc.
 Data Storage: Outputs can be stored in
Disadvantages
 Cost:
Generally more expensive than analog
voltmeters.
 Complexity: More complex circuitry may lead
to higher maintenance.
 Power Dependence: Requires a power
source, which can be a limitation in some
situations.
 Response Time: May have a slower response
time compared to analog voltmeters for
rapidly changing signals.
Conclusion
 Digital voltmeters are indispensable in the
field of electronics and electrical engineering,
providing unparalleled precision and reliability.
 Theirapplications range from laboratory
measurements and current calculations to
power measurement, verification, and circuit
design.
 The ease of use, durability, and data storage
capabilities make DVMs a preferred choice for
professionals and hobbyists alike.
