TerrestrialPlanets
Planets with solid surfaces made up of
rocks and metals.
EARTH SCIENCE
OUTER SOLAR SYSTEM
- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Neptune
- also known as “Gas or Jovian Planets”.
Gas Planets
Planets with no solid surfaces, only made up
mostly of hydrogen.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
Mercury
- The closest planet to the SUN.
- The smallest planet in the solar system.
- only the second hottest planet next to Venus.
- No atmosphere to regulate the temperature.
- The core is made up of liquid sulfur.
- It takes 59 Earth days to make a rotation.
- One complete revolution around the Sun
is just equal to 88 Earth days.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
-
Venus
The hottest planet of the solar system.
- No difference in temperature between day & night
because of the greenhouse gases that regulates
the high temperature of the planet.
- Sister planet of the Earth due to its size.
- Clouds create acid rains due to carbon
- No moon. dioxide.
- Rotates in different direction. - Many extremely active volcanoes,
- “Morning Star”
- Longest day in the solar system. 243
Earth days for one rotation, but only 224
Earth days for one complete revolution.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
-
Mars
The pull of gravity is less than on Earth.
- Has the largest, most intense and most
powerful sandstorms in the solar system.
- A day on Mars is equal to 24hr,39min,35s.
- It has an unofficial flag that has colors
red,green and blue(by Mars Society).
- Has two(2) irregular-shaped moons :
Phobos and Deimos
- It has the biggest mountain in the solar
system, the Olympus Mons.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
Jupiter
- The largest planet in the solar system.
- A failed star.
- It has more than 60 moons, the main ones are
: Io(a multicolor moon w/ hundreds of
volcanoes), Europa(frozen moon),Callisto(the
most impact craters in the solar system),
Ganymede(the largest moon in the entire
solar system). Discovered by Galileo Galilei
in 1610(Galilean Satellites).
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
Jupiter
- Mainly composed of hydrogen and helium.
- The “Great Red Spot” is a storm, larger
than the Earth.
- It takes 12 Earth years to orbit the Sun.
- It rotates in just 9 hours and 55
minutes(the fastest among planets).
- It also has very thin rings.
- The volume is equivalent to 1,317 Earths,
but the weight is only 318 times higher.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
-
Saturn
The second largest planet in the solar system.
- A day lasts for only 10 hours and 14 minutes,
but a year is equivalent to 29 Earth years.
- The rings could possibly be formed from
particles of an ancient moon which was
destroyed in a collision about 50 million years
ago.
- It has 62 moons, the main ones are : Titan (the
largest moon of Saturn and with thick
atmosphere).
- The only planet that is less dense than water.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
Uranus
- It has 11 rings composed of ice and rocks.
- It has 27 moons, Titania is the largest.
- A year is equivalent to 84 Earth years.
The pale blue color of the planet is caused
by methane that filters the red light.
The core is solid rock, possibly diamond-
like rocks due to pressure.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
Uranus
- Its distance from the Sun is twice the
distance of Saturn from the Sun.
- It rotates from north to south due to its
inclination at 98 degrees.
- Uranus orbits the Sun tilted sideways.
FACTS ABOUT THE PLANETS
Neptune
- The farthest planet from the Sun.
- Coldest planet in the solar system at -221.4
degrees celsius.
- It also has rings brighter than other planets.
- It has 13 moons, Triton is the largest.
- It takes 165 Earth years to orbit the Sun.
- It has the fastest winds in the solar system.
- It has a “Great Dark Spot” about the size of
the Earth.
