REQUIREMENT OF
LEVEL MEASUREMENT
• How much fluid/substance is there in a
vessel/sump/tank, etc.?
• Level devices are usually used to identify
the volume of liquid held
inside a tank.
• At the same time, it is important to:
- keep a liquid/fluid within certain
limits of the vessel
- use signal for controlling

Float Devices
• An object, which floats on
a liquid will follow the
vertical movement of the
fluid level.
• This movement can be used
to indicate the level of a fluid
and for controlling purposes
to keep the fluid within the
limits in a vessel.
Different Floating Devices
• Cord Type
• Mechanical Type
• Magnetically-
operated Type
• Bypass indicator
Type
Cord Mechanical
Type Type
(Ball Float)
• The operation of the ball float is simple.
The ball floats on the top of the liquid
in the tank. If the liquid level changes,
the float will follow and change the
position of the pointer attached to the
rotating shafts.
Magnetically-operated
Type
• Indicate when the level of the fluid is
too high or too low in the tank.
When the float rises and falls, the outer
magnet will attract the inner magnet,
causing the inner magnet to follow the level
within a vessel.
• Can be used for continuous
measurement.
Bypass Operator
Indicator
• Combination of sight glass, float and
magnetically-operated display.
Displacer Devices
• Very much similar to floating devices in
appearance but operates on a different principle:
Archimedes Principle.
