FUNCTIO
Function
N
can be defined as a
special relationship among the
inputs ( i.e the domain) and their
outputs (i.e co-domain or range)
where inputs has usually one
output and the output can be
traced back to its input.
It is denoted by f(x).

ALGEBRAIC FUNCTION AND
IT’S TYPES
Algebraic functions are mathematical functions that can
be expressed as a combination of variables, constants and
mathematical operations such as: Addition, Subtraction,
Multiplication, Division and Exponentiation .
Types of Algebraic function :

 Polynomial Function  Rational Function

f(x)=anxn+an-1xn-1+…+ax+a0 f(x)= P(x)
Q(x)
I. Linear Function
f(x)=ax+b
 Radical function
II. Quadratic Function f(x) = √x

Methods of Solving
Quadratic Function
Methods of Solving Quadratic Function
• Solving a quadratic function includes findin

•The methods of solving quadratic equation

are:
1) Factoring
2) Completing the square
3) Quadratic
Formula
Factoring
•Write the function in the form of ax2+bx+c=0
•Factor the quadratic expression into two binomial expressions
and set each factor equal to zero
Example: y=x2-4
Now, x2-4=0
Or , (x-2)(x+2)=0 [ Factoring given
equation]
This gives (x-2)=0 or (x+2)=0
So, =2 or

x 0 1 2 -1 -2 3 -3
y -4 -3 0 -3 0 5 5
Completing the square
•Rewrite the quadratic equation in the form (x+K)2=C by
completing the square.
•Once in this form, solve for x.
Example:
y=x
Now,2+2x-3
-4+x2+2.1x+12
=0
Or, (x+1)2=4 [ (x+y)2=x2+2xy+y2 ]
Or, (x+1) = √4
So, we get ,
Either, x+1=2 or,
x+1=-2
x=1,-3
x -1 -2 0 1 -3 -4 2
y -4 -3 -3 0 0 5 5
Quadratic Formula
•Use the quadratic formula x= -b±√b2-4ac to find the solutions.

Example : y= x2+2x
2a

Now, x2+2x=0
Comparing with ax2+bx+c=0 we get,
a=1,b=2,c=0
Or, x= -2±√(2)2-4.1.0
2.1
Or, x= -2±2
2
This gives x= 0 , -2
x -1 -2 0 1 -3
y --1 0 0 3 3
Graphing Quadratic
Function
Graphing Quadratic Function
1) Identify the coefficients
2) Find the vertex
3) Determine the direction of
parabola
4) Find x-intercept and y-intercept
5) Find additional points
6) Plot the points
7) Draw the parabola
Graphing Quadratic Function
Example: f(x)=2x2-4x-6
Solution,
Here given,
f(x)=2x2-4x-
6
Comparing f(x) with ax2+bx+c=0
we get,
a=2,b=-4
h = -b = 4&c=-6k = 2.12-4.1-6 =-
=1 8
2a Vertex
2.2 (h,k)=1,-8
Now, Let’s find the x and y for getting the curve
x 2 0 3 -1 4 -2
y -6 -6 0 0 10 10
APPLICATION OF QUADRATIC
FUNCTION
APPLICATION OF QUADRATIC FUNCTION
1) Physics
2) Engineering and
Design
3) Economics and
Finance
4) Algebra
5) Geometry
6) Computer Graphics
7) Signal Processing
Example : 1
A boy kicked a football in the air across the field . The ball reaches a maximum height
of 64 ft 2 seconds after it was kicked. The ball hits the ground 4 seconds after it was

Solution:
kicked. At what time is the ball 48 ft in the air.

We know
that, 𝑦 =𝑎𝑥 2+𝑏𝑥 +𝑐
In vertex form,
where, (h,k)=
vertex
Now,
Let H=function of
time(t) ,t=time
h=2 &k=64
H=a(t-2) 2 (from given)
+64
At (0,0) ( the starting point of boy)
0=a(0-2)2+64
0=4a+64
∴ a = -16
Now
H =,-16(t-2)2+64 ( Relation between height &
Now,time)
When H = 48 ( Given)
H=-16(t-2)2+64
48=-16(t-2)2+64
48-64=-16(t-2)2
48-64=(t-2)2
-16
√ 48-64=t-2
-16
t-2=±√1

Either t=3 sec or t=1 sec

t=2±1

Table for the curve:

t 0 1 2 3 4
h 0 48 64 48 0
