possessions?
What is an
apostrophe
The apostrophe is a
form of punctuation
that looks like a comma
but is raised off the line
(‘). It is used to show
possession and
contraction.
Uses of
Apostrophe
 To show
possession.
To form
contractions
To show possession

Possession
 The possessive case of a noun is shown
by the apostrophe and an (s) to show that
something belongs to someone or
something.
 In singular nouns, it is shown by ‘s, e.g.

Bola’s bag, the animal’s foot. However, in

some singular nouns, it is shown by the
apostrophe only (‘) to avoid awkward-
sounding double ‘s’ endings.

Examples:
Mr. Jones’ car
Mrs. Moses’ books.
In the plural, it is shown in
two ways:
a. By adding the apostrophe
only (‘) when the plural
ends in –s or –es, e.g. the
boys’ books, the ladies’
coats.
b. By adding the apostrophe
and s (‘s) when the plural
does not end in s, e.g. the
children’s toys, the
women’s dresses.
Try this

 Insert apostrophe in the right places

1. Topes bag is big.
2. We are going to the Jones this Sunday.
