Exploration
You can use algebra tiles to represent integers. A + tile
represents +, A - tile represent -1

A. In group of three student, prepare 15 to 20 algebra tiles
per group. You may cut out the algebra tiles provided on
page 550.
B. Use your algebra tiles to complete part (b) and (c) of
questions 1- 4. Part (a) of question 1 - 4 have been done
for you.

Extension
You can also add two integers by using some simple
rules. The rules depend on whether the integers have the
same sign or different signs.
Rule
Rules for Adding Integers
LIKE SIGNS: (+) + (+) or (-) + (-)
Find the sum of their absolute values and use the sign
common to both integers
UNLIKE SIGNS: (+) + (-) or (-) + (+)
Find the difference of their absolute values and use the
sign of the integer with greater absolute value.
Example 1 Adding of Integers
Add
a. -9 + (-3) b. -9 + 6
Solution:
a. Find the absolute values: l-9l = 9; l-3l = 3
Since the sign are the same, add the absolute values:
9 + 3 = 12
The addends are both negative. Therefore, the sum is
negative:
-9 + (-3) = -12
b. Find the absolute values: l-9l = 9; l6l = 6
Since the sign are different, subtract the absolute values:
9-6=3
The negative addend has the greater absolute value.

If opposites are added, the sum is
always 0
1. Addition Property of Opposites
a + (-a) = 0 and -a + a = 0
2. Addition Property of Zero
a + 0 = 0 + a = a, for any number a

Example 3 Addition of Integers
Use a number line to show the addition of two integers.
Start at 0. Move to the right to add a positive integer. Move
to the left to add a negative integer.

Use a number line to add the following integers.


a. 4 + 3
b. 7 + (-6)
c. -4 + (-4)

Begin at 0. Move 4 place to the right, then 3 place more.


The stoping place is 7 4+3+7

Begin at 0. Move 7 places to the right. Then, move 6 places


to the left. The stopping place is + 1.
7 + (-6) = 1

Begin at 0. Move 4 places to the left, then 4 places more.


The stopping place is -8
-4 + (-4) = -8

Add
a. 4 + 7 + 12
b. 17 + (-4) + 10 + (-5)
Solution
a. The signs are the same. Add their absolute value
4 + 7 + 12 = 23
Since the signs of the addends are all positive, the sum
is positive. 4 + 7 + 12 = 23
b. The signs are different. Find the sums of integers with
same sign
17 + (-4) + 10 + (-5)

27 -9
Then, add the sum according to the rule for adding
integers with different signs. 27 + (-9) = 18

Example 5 Real LIfe Application
Electrons have a charge of -1. Protons have a charge of
+1. The total charge of an atom is the sum of its electron
charges and its proton charges. Find the total charge of an
atom with 16 protons and 18 electrons.
Solution:
Represent 16 protons as +16 and 18 electrons as -18. To
find the total charge, add +16 and -18.
(+16) + (-18) = -2
The total charge of the atom with 16 protons and 18
electrons is -2.
