Happiness
• Hedonic Happiness
Hedonic happiness focuses on personal happiness involving pleasure, joy and
satisfaction, for instance, you enjoyed a good meal at the restaurant, you had
fun with your friends in the party, or you felt so satisfied with your life
basking in the sun in the sea beach

• Subjective Well-being (SWB)

It is used as a synonym for happiness (Diener, 1984, 2000). Subjective well-
being is defined as consisting of three components: (a) life satisfaction, (b)
presence of positive affect, and (c) a relative absence of negative affect
(Baumgardner & Crothers, 2015, p.17).

• Eudaimonic happiness
It is also called psychological well being. In addition to minimizing negative
experiences and maximizing positive experiences in life, well-being also
consists of achieving full human potential and to live life fully with meaning
and authenticity and purposefulness (Waterman et al., 2010).
Social Media

• Social media is a diverse set of online tools that

enable social interaction and the creation, sharing,
and exchange of user-generated content (Kaplan,
2015).
• It encompasses a wide range of platforms, including
social networking sites, blogs, and discussion forums
(Zahoor, 2017).
• These platforms have become an integral part of
daily life, providing a space for people to connect,
share, and exchange ideas (Shahjahan, 2014)
The Objectives and Scope
of the Systematic Review

• The aim of this study is to conduct a thorough

analysis of the current literature about the
correlation between happiness and social media
use.
• To pinpoint the important variables that mediate
or regulate the relationship between happiness
and social media.
• To assess the present study's methodological
shortcomings and areas of strength.
• To summarize results and suggest lines of
inquiry for further study to have a greater
understanding of this multifaceted interaction
Discussion
Social media has a complex impact on well-being and
happiness, with both positive and negative outcomes. On the
positive side, social media can enhance self-esteem, reduce
loneliness, improve mental health, foster a sense of belonging
and community, and boost happiness through meaningful
connections and supportive interactions.
Conversely, excessive or passive use, frequent social
comparison, exposure to idealized images, and experiences of
cyberbullying can decrease self-esteem, increase feelings of
inadequacy and loneliness, and lead to anxiety, depression,
and stress.
The effects largely depend on how individuals engage with
social media platforms, highlighting the importance of
balanced and mindful usage to maximize benefits and
minimize harm.
Future Research
Needs

• Investigate the role of specific social media platform

features in promoting or inhibiting happiness.
• Explore the impact of social media on different
demographic groups, including pre-teens, middle-aged
individuals, and older adults.
• Address the research gap as current studies only
predominantly focus on adolescents and young adults.
• Conduct studies on platforms like YouTube and WhatsApp,
which have large user bases but limited researches.
• Undertake longitudinal studies to track changes in social
media use and happiness levels over time.
