INTRODUCTION
 A National wide family planning was launched
offcially in 1952 by the Union Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare. Government of India in first and
second five years plan (1951-1961) the programme
was taken up in a modesty way with a clinical
approach.

 Family Welfare includes not only planning of births but they welfare of whole family by means of
total family welfare.
 The family welfare programme has priority in india, because its success depends up on the
quality of life all citizen.
 ‘’ A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and merely the absence of disease or
infirmity in all matters relating to reproductive system and its function and process.’’

HISTORY

 It was started in year 1951.

 The programme has evolved in terms of varied approaches from the clinical approach1 mode during 1952-61 to
the current reproductive and child health [RCH] approach.
 In 1977,the govt of India redesignated the ‘’national family planning programme’’ as the ‘’national family
welfare programme’’.
 Its aimed at achieving a higher end to improve the quality of life of the people .
 India is the first country in the world ,that implemented the family welfare programme at govt level .
 Govt has concentrated on this programme in various 5-year plans through higher priority was accorded to it
after 4th five year plan.
 Due to bad effects of emergency and faulty propaganda, family planning suffered major set-back during 1977-
1979.
 Family welfare programme has been remained the important aspect of each five year plan, national health..

Concepts of welfare program
1.The concept of family welfare is basically related to quality of life..
2.As such it includes education, nutrition, health, employment,women's
welfare and rights, shelter, safe drinking water -all vital factors associated
with it..
3.Its a centrally sponsored program.
4.The services are taken to every doorstep in order to motivate families to
accept the small family norm.
 OBJECTIVES

• The promote the health of the mothers and children's to ensure safe
motherhood and child survival..
• To promote the adoption of small family size norm, on the basis of voluntary
acceptance..

• To promote the use of spacing methods..

• To ensure adequate supply of contraceptives to all eligible couples within
easy reach..

achieved by the year 2000 A.D ...
• Reduction of birth rate from 29 per 1000 (in 1992) to 21 by 2000 AD
• Reduction of death rate from 10 (in 1992) to 9 per 1000 ..
• Raising couple protection rate from 43.3 to 60 percent..
• Reduction in average family size..
• Decrease in Infant Mortality rate
• Reduction of net reproductive rate....

• Integration with health services - it has been integrated with other health
services instead of being a separate service.Here public are motivated for post
delivery sterilization, abortion and use of contraceptives..
• Literacy - This is direct correlation between illiteracy and fertility.. So girls
education is prioritized...
• Breast feeding - Highly encouraged these days by 5 million births per annum
are saved...
• Raising the age for marriage - it has been raised to 21 yrs for males and 18yrs
for females...
• Mass media - Motivation through radio, tv, cinemas, news papers, puppet
shows and folk dances..
