The following table gives all the possible samples of three cities,
the sample values, and the means of the samples.
SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF THE MEAN
SAMPLING
ERROR
• When the sample mean is used to estimate the
population mean, an error is usually made. This error is
called the sampling error, and is defined to be the
absolute difference between the sample mean and the
population mean. The sampling error is defined by

THE SAMPLE
MEAN
• Since the sample mean has a distribution, it is a random
variable and has a mean and a standard deviation.
• The mean of the sample mean is represented by the
symbol and the standard deviation of the sample mean
is represented by .
• The standard deviation of the sample mean is referred
to as the standard error of the mean.
Consider all samples of size 5 from this population:
2 5 6 8 10
12 13
1. Compute the mean and the standard deviation of the
population.
2. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means
3. Calculate the mean of the sampling distribution of the
sample means. Compare this to the mean of the population.
4. Calculate the mean of the sampling distribution of the
sample means. Compare this to the mean of the population.
