PRESS TOOL
PRESENTED BY

UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF

MR. ARNAB BHATTACHARYA

POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TOOL

DESIGN AND CAD/CAM
• Introduction Of Press Tool

• Press tools are special custom tools built to produce a particular

component mainly out of sheet metal.
• The principle operations of press tool are cutting & non-cutting [forming]
operations
• Ex. – Automobile parts, Sheet metal parts of electrical equipment's, etc.
COMPONENT DETAIL
AND
TOOLING CONCEPT
Fig- COMPONENT DRAWING
• Component Data

• MATERIAL:- MILD STEEL(M.S.)

• Tmax:- 360N/mm2

• THICKNESS (t) :- 5mm

• AREA:- 18874.6184mm2

• PERIMETER (l) :- 592.115 mm
• CALCULATIONS
1.STRIP LAYOUT:-
174

158.6

WIDTH=174.8
PITCH=158.6
2.ECONOMIC FACTOR:-
AREA OF COMPONENT X NO. OF ROWS X 100
WIDTH X PITCH
= 18874.6184 X 1 X 100174.8 X 158.6019 = 68.08%

3.CUTTING CLEARANCE (C) :-

= c X t X Tmax/10
(c =0.01 FOR NORMAL AND 0.05 FOR ACCURATE COMPONENT)
= 0.01 X 5 X 360/10
C=0.3mm/side
4.Punch And Die Calulations:-
For Piercing:-
DIMENSION PUNCH DIE
Φ90 Φ90 Φ90+2C=90.6

For Blanking:-

DIMENSION PUNCH DIE

Φ170 Φ170-2C=169.4 Φ170
Φ150 Φ150-2C=149.4 Φ150

5.Cutting Force:-

Cutting Force = l x t x τ max

Shear force (Fsh) = 592.115 x 5 x 360
= 1065807
= 106.58 Tons

Press tonnage = 1.2 x cutting force

= (1.2 x 106.58)
= 130 Tons approx.
6.Stripping Force:-
It is taken as 10% of cutting force (Shearing force),
= (Fsh) x 10%
= 0.1 X 1065807
= 106580.7 N
7.Selection Of Fasteners:-

4 bolts used hence strength required for one bolt is given by,

= 106580.7/4 = 26645.17 N
From technical table (Page no. 361, table no. 13.17.0 strength of threads) (Press Tool
Design & Construction - P.H.JOSHI) we come to know M24 bolt has safe load which is suitable for our
requirement.

8.Calculation Of Different Part Size:-

a) Die plate thickness TD = Fsh1/3

= 106.581/3
= 5 cm
= 50 mm

b) Thickness of Top plate = 2 TD

= 2 X 50
= 100 mm

c) Thickness of bottom plate = 2 TD

= 2 X 50
= 100 mm

d) Thickness of punch holder = 0.8XTD

Plate = 40 mm

e) Thickness of stripper Plate = 0.8XTD

9.Working Area (W) :-
W = 430 X 400 mm2
MARGIN (M) = (1.5 TO 2) X Td = 2 X 50= 100mm

CONCLUSION

By going through the various stages of the project, we learn following

things:-
– We able to make the manufacturing planning of parts.
– We learn the modification, rework, rectification.
– Optimum design for manufacturing and cost effectiveness.
