PHITS installation
Installers for Windows, Mac, and Linux are available
• Windows: Move to “win” folder and double-click setup-eng.vbs (see
win/instruction-eng.pptx)
• Mac: Move to “mac” folder and Control-click
“PHITS_Installer.command” and select “open” from the shortcut menu
(see mac/README-eng.pdf)
• Linux: Move to “linux” folder and see README-eng.txt
Important notice
• Approximately 10 GB disk space is required.
• Please do not change the path (folder name) to install PHITS from its
default setting (e.g. c:/ for Windows).
• If PHITS has been already installed in the default setting path, please
rename the former folder’s name (e.g. “phits” to “phits-old”) before the
installation.
Installation 4
Confirmation of Installation
When installation is completed, open
/phits/lecture/basic/lec01/
folder and execute PHITS with an input file lec01.inp
Windows: Select an input file -> Right click -> Send to -> Select
PHITS
Mac: Drag & drop in input file to a blue PHITS icon in the dock
Linux: type “phits.sh lec01.inp” in your console
Execution 5
Check PHITS simulation results
When PHITS execution is finished, output files phits.out, track_xz.out,
track_xz.eps, track_xz_err.out, track_xz_err.eps, batch.out are created. Open
track_xz.eps and check whether eps file is shown or not.
track_xz.eps
If you cannot see this figure, please install software for opening EPS file by
referring the instruction files in each folder
6
Installation of Text Editor
Install text editor that can show line number. Our recommended text
editor is Notepad++. for Windows and CotEditor for Mac.
(Windows only) Associate *.inp and *.out files with the installed text
editor (e.g. Notepad++)
7
Run from Terminal (Mac only)
Once you run PHITS by dragging & drop an input file into PHITS
icon, a terminal window is opened. We recommend to run PHITS
via the terminal window from the next time
How to run PHITS via terminal
1. Drag & drop an input file (e.g. lec01.inp) into PHITS icon.
A terminal window is opened and PHITS is executed in the terminal
2. Click the terminal and press cursor key “↑”
Previous command (e.g. phits.sh lec01.inp) is shown in the terminal
3. Press “Enter” for running the same input file.
4. Change the input file name (e.g. phits.sh lec01-test.inp) to run
another input file in the same folder
It’s much easier and faster to run PHITS many times

Important Notice!
Electricity supply of laptops
During the course, please be sure that AC electricity is
supplied to your laptop. Otherwise, power saving mode setup
will be applied depending on the OS setup. In that case you
may suffer from CPU power limitation.
