INTRODUCTION

•Bhaskaracharya, the
great astronomer and
mathematician of ancient
India, was the first person
to calculate the time taken
by the earth to orbit the
sun
BHASKARACHARYA’S WORKS
BHASKARA’S CONTRIBUTION TO MATHEMATICS

• In Siddhanta Shironmani, Bhaskara developed spherical trigonometry along with

a number of other trigonometric results.

• Bhaskara’s arithmetic text Leelavati covers the topics of definitions, arithmetical

terms, interest computation, arithmetical and geometrical progressions, plane
geometry, solid geometry, the shadow of the gnomon methods to solve
indeterminate equations and combinations.
“ LILAVATI “

• Lilavati was composed by renowned astronomer and mathematician

Bhaskaracharya II (b. 1114 AD) in 1150.

• This is the first volume of his main work Siddhanta Shironmani (“Crown of
treatises”) alongside Bijaganita, Grahaganita and Goladhaya.

• Lilavati is a comprehensive exposition of arithmetic, algebra, geometry,

mensuration, number theory and related topics.
• Lilavati is the most celebrated work in the tradition of Mathematics in India.

• This highly important textbook has been used for almost 85 years and is still used as a
textbook in many Sanskrit institutions in India.

• This articulate, scholarly and legendary presentation has been translated into several
languages of the world.

• This textbook deals mainly with ’Arithmetic’ and consists of 279 verses written in Sanskrit
in poetic form (terse verses) with a prose commentary.
NUMBER THEORY PROBLEM IN LILAVATI

• Generating ‘a’ and ‘b’ such that (a²+b²-1) and (a²-b²-1) are both perfect squares.
• Bhaskara’s work on finding such numbers is really a wonderful part in Lilavati.
• Bhaskara gives a =8x⁴+1 and b=8x³

x a =8x⁴+1 b=8x³ a²+b²-1 a²-b²-1

CONCLUSION
Bhaskara II’s work was so well thought out that a lot of it being used today as well without
modifications.

A number of institutes and colleges in India are named after him, including Bhaskaracharya
Pratishthana in Pune, Bhaskaracharya college of Applied Sciences in Delhi, Bhaskaracharya
Institute for Space Applications and Geo-Informatics in Gandhinagar.

On 20 November 1981, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the Bhaskara II
satellite.

It is a matter of great pride and honour that his works have received recognition across the globe.
