What are the headway English language levels: How can you determine student`s
level?

Levels are determiners of your understanding and ability in your desired language
specifically English.
English speakers are split into six levels:

1. Beginner
2. Elementary
3. Pre- Intermediate
4. Intermediate
5. Upper- Intermediate
6. Advanced

 Levels are very important for the flow and overall progression of the class and student.
 Tests and levels are used by teachers to see how best to help you improve your English
skills. A test may seem like a hard task, sitting there, and having to choose, find, or
create answers. NO fear,

What do the different levels mean in Headway and European scale or Global Scale of English GSE ?
Beginners (A0-A1): Means the student has just started to learn and has practically no knowledge of the
language:

Elementary (A1): Means student can understand basic phrases and can interact in a simple way. The vocabulary at
this level is about 1,200 words.

Pre- intermediate (A2): Students have a general idea of what is being said but have some difficulties. However,
students are confident in speaking English and have a vocabulary of at least 1,500 words, can read simple texts and
understand their general meaning.

Intermediate (B): At this level, students have a good grasp on the knowledge, have accumulated at the previous levels, and
students have added some new and sophisticated vocabulary. Vocabulary is about 2,500 words, and you can effectively
construct sentences in English in both spoken and written form.

Upper- Intermediate (B2): student can speak and understand English without difficulty. If student can differentiate
regional accents in English, speak in both formal and informal settings, identify students own mistakes in grammar and
pronunciation, understand and use both simple and complex grammar, openly express their thoughts, and their make few
mistakes when speaking , 3,000-4,000 vocabulary..

Advanced (C1-C2): Students are almost as proficient in English as native speakers. In other words, they can speak fluently
on various topics with a limited number of errors.
What level of English do the student have?
How can we measure their ongoing progress?

Five ways to identify the level of your students ranging from teacher`s observations in
classroom activities to more scientific companies` tests.

1. Placement and diagnostic tests. Using headways books come with abundant test
packages. Test students’ abilities across four skills listening, speaking, reading, and
writing.
2. The class associate rough overview. Once you have been assigned a class, tests
will give you a rough overview of the level of your students and may help you
identify the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. It’s ideal for classes
with up to 18 students and from Elementary to Advanced levels.
3. Questionnaires, writing tasks and tutorials. This is a process that’s better used
with Upper- intermediate to Advanced students. For instance, set a writing
assignment about summer holidays to explain their summer holiday(150-180
words). While the students are doing the task, speak to them individually working
through the questionnaire they will have filled in previously.

4-Hold an interview of a maximum of 5 minutes and agree three personal objectives

with each student for the course.

5. GSE, Global Scale of English. There are lot of well-established and reliable
measures out there to identify your students’ level of English but the international
system the GSE. The system measures the four skills and is aligned other important
exams such as IELTS or TOEFL.
What the most effective English language TESTs

 The aim is to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses to inform both learners and
teachers and subsequent learning objectives. The system provides you with:
The GSE scale
 FCE (First Certificate in English)

 the CAE (Cambridge Advanced English)

 PTE, TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge exams

Why the test is important?
Imagine an occasion were, a teacher has been informed of a high level student and therefore prepares for
such. The lesson begins and it seem like that the student is not at this level and were dishonest regarding their
level. This will reduce the speed of the class and delay progression. Levels are used to help and shouldn’t be
seen as a bad thing if you are in a lower level, just an opportunity to learn more.

How long is needed to determine stay in one level?

Sadly, there isn’t any real evidence which determines how long student would stay at one level, it is based only
how much student practises the language. A lot of academics argue this issue but, the teachers, will attempt to
help you achieve your goal as long as student put the work in.
