What is a
RELATION?
Relation is any set of ordered pairs. The set of all first
elements of the ordered pairs is called the domain of
the relation, and the set of all second elements is called
the range
What is a
FUNCTION?
A function is a relation or rule of correspondence
between two elements (domain and range) such that
each element in the domain corresponds to exactly one
element in the range.
Representation of Functions
A function can be represented using:
• Set of Ordered Pairs
• Table of Values
• Mapping Diagrams
• Graph
Example #1
Which of the following is a function?
A = {(1,2), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5)}
B = {(3,3), (4,4), (5,5), (6,6)}
C = {(1,0), (0, 1), (-1,0), (0,-1)}
D = {(a,b), (b, c), (c,d), (a,d)}

Solving Problems Involving Functions
Representing Real-Life Situations
• There are different types of functions.
• A function can have more than one equation.
Such functions are called piecewise functions.
PIECEWISE FUNCTION
A piecewise function is a function in which
more than one formula is used to define the
output. Each formula has its own domain, and
the domain of the function is the union of all
these smaller domains.

expressions, given that x=-3, y=2, and
z=-8.

Evaluating Functions
• To evaluate a function means to find the value of
the output f(x), given the input x.
Operations on Functions
Just like in Algebra, we have:
• Addition
• Subtraction
• Multiplication
• Division
Also, we have composition of functions.

Performance task #1
Tax rates in the Philippines.
Research about tax rates in the Philippines (e.g., if you earn a
certain income level, then your tax rate is such and such).
Based on the existing tax structure, define a piecewise
function that models this situation. Use the piecewise
function representing the tax structure in the Philippines as a
basis for discussing whether they think the tax rate is fair.
Thank you!
