Vectors and Scalars

Scalar and Vector Quantities

Physical Quantities Description
Scalars
Examples: mass 15 kilograms
time 30 seconds
speed 100 meters/second
energy 4, 184 joules
Vectors
Examples: velocity 80 meters/second westward
displacement 20 meters going east
acceleration 9.8 meters/second2 downward

force 500 newtons, 200 north of east

Scalars vs. Vectors
• Scalars are quantities that are specified by
magnitude only.
– A magnitude tells us the numerical value and unit
of a quantity.
• Vectors are quantities that are specified by
both magnitude and direction.
Given the word cloud, put the vector quantities in a
vector box, and all scalar quantities in Scalar box.

• A vector is represented by a symbol – an
arrow.

Identify , then classify the quantity in each
statement as vector or scalar.
1. 41 million people take the train on any given
day.
2. My brother is 17 years old.
3. The water current is 15 meters per second
away from the shore.
4. The northeasterly wind is blowing at 20
knots.
5. The boat weighs 20 000 tons.
Draw the following vectors:
1. A = 100 N east
2. B = 50 m, 300 north of east
3. C = 60 km/h, 500 south of east
4. D = 80 m/s, 250 north of west
5. E = 25 m/s2, 380 south of west

• Distance is the length of the actual paths
traveled.
• Displacement is the length and direction of
the change in position measured from the
starting point.
Find the distance traveled and the
displacement of the following vectors.

1. 40 m due north and 30 m due east

2. 6 m due south, 10 m due east, and 5 m due
north
3. 20 m to the west, 5 m to the south, and 10 m
to the east
Sample Problem
• Three monkeys A, B, and C start from the
same point O. Monkey A went 3 km north, and
then 4.0 km west. Monkey B went 5 km east,
and monkey C went around the circular path
of diameter 2 km. Determine (a) the distance
traveled by each monkey and (b) the
displacement of each monkey from point O.
