QUARTER 1 LESSON 1:

NUMBER
PATTERNS
Sequence
 collection of objects that follow a certain rule or
pattern
Finite Sequence
 a sequence which has a first term and a last term
examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
a, b, c, d
Infinite Sequence
 a sequence that has no end
 endless
examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …
a, b, c, d, …
Terms of a
 are the function values which are more
sequence
commonly written as

first term
second term
last term or general term
A. Generating Patterns

Describe the pattern of each given sequence.

1. A, E, I, O, U

2. Red, Yellow, Blue

3. Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen

4. -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3

5. April, June, September, November

B. Finding the next first 5 terms of a Sequence given
the term or general term

Example 1: Given:

𝒏 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎 𝒏 𝟒 𝒏 − 𝟑
𝒕𝒉

𝐹𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 1 4 ( 1 ) − 3=4 − 3=𝟏

𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 2 4 ( 2 ) − 3=8 − 3=𝟓
𝑇h𝑖𝑟𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 3 4 ( 3 ) − 3= 12− 3= 𝟗
𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑡h 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 4 4 ( 4 ) −3=16 − 3=𝟏𝟑
𝐹𝑖𝑓𝑡h 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 5 4 (5 ) − 3=20 − 3=𝟏𝟕
Example 2: Given:

𝒏 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎 𝒏 𝟑𝒏
𝒕𝒉

( 1)
𝐹𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 1 3 =𝟑
( 2)
𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 2 3 =3 ∙ 3 =𝟗
(3 )
𝑇h𝑖𝑟𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 3 3 =3 ∙ 3 ∙ 3=𝟐𝟕
𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑡h 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 4 3( 4 )= 3 ∙3 ∙ 3 ∙ 3=𝟖𝟏
(5 )
𝐹𝑖𝑓𝑡h 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 5 3 = 3 ∙3 ∙ 3 ∙ 3 ∙3=𝟐𝟒𝟑
C. Finding the General or the term of a
Sequence with Linear Expressions

General or the term of a sequence

 it is an expression that generates
the numbers of a sequence.
 pattern searching, guess and
check, and working backwards
strategies are used to determine
the term of a sequence
Example 3: Given:

𝑎 1=3 (1 ) + 9= 12

𝑎 2= 3 ( 2 ) +9=15

𝑎 3= 3 ( 3 ) + 9=18 𝑡h𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑖𝑠𝟑

𝑎 4 =3 ( 4 )+ 9=21 𝑡h𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒12 𝑖𝑠𝟗

𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓 : 𝒂𝒏 =𝟑 𝒏+𝟗
Example 4: Given:

𝑎 1=3 ( 21 ) =6

𝑎 2= 3 ( 22 ) =12

𝑎 3= 3 ( 23 ) =24 𝑡h𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜 𝑖𝑠 𝟐

𝑎 4 =3 ( 24 ) = 48
𝑡h𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒6 𝑖𝑠 𝟑

𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓 : 𝒂𝒏 =𝟑 ∙𝟐𝒏
D. Finding the General or the term of a Sequence
with Fractions and Radical Expressions

Example 5: Given:

1 1 1 1 1
𝑛

1 1 1 1
𝑎𝑛 1 2 3 4 5 𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓 : 𝒂𝒏 = 𝟏
𝒏
Example 6: Given:

𝑛 𝑎 1=

1+1 2
1

2 2
𝑎 2= =
2+1 3
12 3 4 5
𝑎𝑛 3 3
23 4 5 6 𝑎 3= =
3 +1 4
4 4
𝑎4 = =
4 +1 5
𝒏
𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓 : 𝒂𝒏 = 𝑎 5=
5
=
5
𝒏+𝟏 5+ 1 6
Example 7: Given:

𝑎𝑛 10 √ 71 7 √ 724 √7 31 √ 7
𝑎 1=( 7 √ 7 ) ( 1 ) +3 √ 7=10 √ 7
𝑎 2= ( 7 √ 7 ) ( 2 ) + 3 √ 7=17 √ 7
𝑎 3= ( 7 √ 7 ) ( 3 ) +3 √ 7=24 √ 7
𝑎 4 =( 7 √ 7 ) ( 4 ) +3 √ 7=31 √ 7

𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓 : 𝒂𝒏 =𝟕 √𝟕 𝒏+𝟑 √ 𝟕
Example 8: Given:

𝑎𝑛 4 √ 6 8 √ 616 √ 6 32 √ 6
𝑎 1=( 2 √ 6 ) ( 21 ) =2 √ 6 ∙ 2= 4 √ 6
𝑎 2= ( 2 √ 6 ) ( 2 2) =2 √ 6 ∙ 4=8 √ 6
𝑎 3= ( 2 √ 6 ) ( 23 ) =2 √ 6 ∙ 8= 16 √ 6
𝑎 4 =( 2 √ 6 ) ( 24 )= 2 √ 6 ∙16=32 √ 6

𝑨𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓 : 𝒂𝒏 =𝟐 √ 𝟔 ( 𝟐 ) 𝒏
