In line with the market needs, MAPL started a 3 line Rice Mill in 2016.It is subsequently added a paddy milling
capacity of 40 tons per hour along with a 5MW Co- Generation power plant too. It has the wherewithal to
supply over 350 tons of paddy per day. The rice husk which is produced during the milling process is used as
fuel for power generation.
Power Plant Overview

The Manchukonda power plant is a co-generation power plant in a

Raichurdistrict of Karnataka this power plant consist of single unit
which has the total capacity of5 Mega watt of electricity. The main
purpose of this power plant is to provide electricity to the
manchukonda rice mill located in same place (beside the power plant)
and to export to GESCOM. In this plant there are two transmission
lines, line one is going to the rice mill(for the purpose of the operating
rice mill) and second line is going to the GESCOM. The plant
produces 5 megawatts of electricity in which power require for the rice

mill is 1.5 Megawatts and remaining exports to the GESCOM.
General Layout of Power Plant

A thermal power station is a power plant in which the

prime is steam driven. Water is heated, turns into
steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an
electric generator. After it passes through the turbine
the steam is condensed and recycled to where it was
heated this is known as Rankine cycle.

SECTIONS IN POWER PLANT & FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

1.Fuel Handling Section : The fuel handling system (FHS) provides a safe means for handling and
performance monitoring of fuel assemblies and control components from the time of receipt of new fuel
assemblies to the shipment of spent fuel.

2.Boiler Section : Boilers are used in power plants in order to produce high pressured steam, so that the plant
can generate electricity. The process that does this is known as the Rankine cycle. The boiler takes in energy
from some form of fuel such as coal, natural gas, or nuclear fuel to heat water into steam.

3.Turbine Section :The turbine section of a gas turbine engine is located aft, or downstream, of the combustion
chamber. Specifically, it is directly behind the combustion chamber outlet. The turbine assembly consists of two
basic elements: turbine inlet guide vanes and turbine blades.
4.De-Mineralized water treatment plant : Demineralization Water Treatment is a physical process. Ion
exchange resins are specially manufactured which help to replace the mineral salts in water. There are two types
of resins – anion exchange and cation exchange resins. The former resins release hydroxyl ions which are
usually negatively charged ions. The cation resins release hydrogen ions which are usually positively charged
ions.

5. Ash Handling Section : Ash handling systems are mechanical devices that correctly dispose of the ash. So,
after the coal has been burned, the ash from the coal is collected and disposed of.
Boilers

Boilers are appliances used to heat water or generate steam for various purposes, primarily heating and hot
water supply in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They typically burn fuels like natural gas, oil, or
biomass to produce heat, which is transferred to water or steam.

Purpose of boilers :

1. Generating Steam

2. Heating

3. Industrial Processes

4. Power Generation

5. Cleaning
Classification of Boilers

The boilers may be classified as follows:

• Horizontal, Vertical and Inclined Boilers

• Externally Fired and Internally Fired

• Fire-tube boiler and Water-tube boiler.

• Natural circulation and Forced Circulation

• High Pressure and Low-Pressure boilers

• Stationary and Portable boilers

• Single tube and Multitube boilers.

Boiler Mountings:

Types of boiler mountings :

1. Main Steam Stop Valve : It is usually applied to the highest part of the shell through the flanges. To control
the flow of steams from the boilers to the main steam pipe

2. Auxiliary Steam Stop Valve : A separate steam line provided by the boilers for the small auxiliary system
is supplied to most steam systems on ships through this valve.

3. Safety Valve : Function To blow off steam to prevent explosions when the steam pressure inside the boiler
exceeds theworking pressure.

4. Scum Blowdown Valves : To extinguish a fire in a boiler furnace when the water level in the boiler falls to
an unsafe limit, and thus the explosion caused by overheating of the furnace plate is avoided.
5. Soot Blower : Required for soot blowing & pipe surface combustion products. It is operated by steams or
compressed air.

6. Salinometer valve : The sampling water cock system is usually equipped with a cooler in order so that
water samples can be collected at any time for testing the feed water.

7. Whistle Valve : If a steam whistle is applied to the ship, the steam is supplied directly from the boiler, in the
form of a small non-return valve known as the whistle valve.

8. Automatic Feed Water Regulator : A device that is important and fit into the feed line Automatic feed
water regulator is one of the important boiler mountings to ensure a proper level of water under all load
conditions.

9. Manhole : The boiler consists of several manhole gates which enable inspection, cleaning, and maintenance
of boiler tubes and internal components by the crew.It Usually fitted ina gate steam drum and a water drum.
Boiler Accessories

These are the devices which are used as integral parts of a boiler and

help in running.

1. Feed pump : It is used to deliver water to the boiler. A feed pump

may be of centrifugal type or reciprocating type. But a double

acting reciprocating pump is commonly used as a feed pump.

2. Super heater : It is an important devices of a steam generating

unit. Its purpose is to increase the temperature of saturated steam

without raising its pressure. It is generally an integral part of a

boiler and is places in the path of hot flue gases from the furnace.
3. Economizer : An Economizer is a device used to heat
feed water by utilizing the heat in the exhaust flue gases
before leaving through the chimney. The economizer is
device, which serves to recover some of the heat being
carried by exhaust flue gases.

4. Air Preheater : The function of pre heater is to heat the

air before it enters the combustion chamber. Air Pre
heaters (APH) is the Shell and tube type Heat Exchangers
used for preheating the air which is fed to the boiler or
furnaces/kilns for combustion of fuels. Air Pre heater’s
primary objective is to extract the waste heat from the
flue gases leaving the boiler
CONCLUSION

From the internship it can be concluded that the Manchukonda thermal power plant of 5 MW units is fairly
organized unit with the machinery available. The turbine is very sophisticated assembly of machinery which
requires specific condition of steam temperature and pressure to work efficiently. Any alteration of the specific
requirements may prove hazardous to the turbine. Another interesting yet worrying fact is quantity of husk
consumed which approximately 171 tons per day the level of pollution is always controlled according to the
established norms, but still one considers it to be quite enough. Well, efforts are always under way in reducing
the pollution and improving the efficiency of the plant. All in all a thermal power project is very large
establishment with many components and it awesome to use how all the components work in a synchronized
manner.
This Internship training focused upon increasing my knowledge and interest in toward the production of
electricity using rice husk as a primary source/fuel. Because electricity is most efficient and necessary needs to
peoples in these days so its production at most efficient method with minimum cost and in proper sequence with
less wastage. I learnt how to produce it by turbine, generators, cooling towers, water and maintain it. It was a
great experience. It increased my practical skills that’s the main thing which i learnt in the training session.
Thus, I believe that my training session will be beneficial for various purposes & hence my efforts will be
fruitful.
