WHAT IS CENTRAL PARK?
Central Park is a public urban park located in
the metropolitan district of Manhattan, in the
city of New York, United States, founded in
1858. The park has a rectangular shape and
approximate dimensions of 4000 x 800 m,
being larger than two smallest nations in the
world; it is almost twice the size of Monaco
and almost eight times the size of Vatican
City.
Central Park is an artificial park that began its
construction in 1857 by the architect Calvert
Vaux and the agronomist Frederick Law
Olmsted. While much of the park appears
natural, it contains several man-made lakes, two
ice-skating rinks, and grassy areas used for
various sporting activities.
With some 37.5 million visitors a year, Central Park is the most visited
park in the United States. In addition, its appearance in numerous
movies and television shows has made it one of the most famous
urban parks in the world. The park is run by the Central Park
Conservancy, a private non-profit company.
