Memory and storage

What are memory and storage? 4

Memory
• Holds the data and instructions that the computer is using whilst
it is on and working
• Memory is electronic
• Memory is fast to access
• Needs power to keep its contents (volatile)

Storage
• Holds programs and data far more permanently
• Magnetic (hard drive), optical (CD, DVD) or electronic (flash
drives and SSD)
• Slow because its works mechanically
• Keeps contents even when computer is switched off (non-
volatile)

Memory Storage
• Where the advert refers to RAM it
indicates memory.
• Terms such as HDD (Hard Disk
Drive), SSD (Solid State Drive) and
DVD writer refer to the storage on the
April 2017 computer.

April 2017
SSDs are much faster at transferring data
than hard drives.

A computer with an SSD will perform

much faster than the same computer with a
hard drive.
Online storage 6

Online storage - disk space that is allocated to you on a

server on the internet
Online storage 7
Online storage 8

Advantages
• Accessible from anywhere on any device with internet
access.
• Saves space on the user’s computer.
• Changes all in one place – all devices always the latest
version
• Backup and security managed by storage provider
• Easy to share files with other people
• Data is still accessible even if your computer ‘crashes’ or is
stolen
Online storage 9

 Disadvantages

• Only accessible when you have an internet connection

• Especially large files may not be usable over slow
connections
• Pay for the bandwidth used to upload and download (and for
extra storage space)
• No control over backup and security
• If the company goes bankrupt you may lose all your data
Online storage/Cloud 10

computing
Online storage differs from Cloud Computing - it only involves
storing files online.
Real cloud computing means that actual programs run on a server
on the internet and you access those programs through your web
browser.
Backing up 11

1. Open Windows/File Explorer.
2. Select files and folders that you want to
write to CD or DVD.
3. Drag the files/folders to icon of the CD or
DVD drive in the left column of
Windows Explorer.
4. Repeat 2 and 3 until you have filled the
disc (around 700 MB for a CD or 4.7 GB
for a DVD) /copied all the files you need.
5. Right-click on the drive and choose the
‘Burn’ option.

Using CDs or DVDs for backup purposes is not

recommended. They are slow and unreliable.

Backups

• Copy or duplicate files in case something goes

wrong. Can be automated.

Archiving

• Storing files that are not meant to be accessed

regularly, but kept as reference, usually onto an
external hard drive.

Backups are essential. Archiving is not.

Basic troubleshooting 14

Managing data and compares backup with storage,

sure that it is clean.
Problems with • Problems writing to a CD or DVD?

create an image, no other task whilst
burning the CD/DVD.
Basic troubleshooting 15

• Formatting – preparing a disk to store

data
Formatting and • Most disks are pre-formatted
reformatting • Now and then you may need to reformat
a disk

• Fix problems on hard drives, SSDs and

Disk scanning flash drives by running a disk scanner
• Check a drive for errors and bad sectors
Basic troubleshooting 16

Disk the files get scattered on the disk
defragmentation • A utility that puts the parts of files back
together again, speeds your computer up
Basic troubleshooting 17

internet
• Deleted files and folders from Recycle
Disk filling up Bin
