Well Completion represents a connection of
hydrocarbon reservoir and surface facilities,
which refers to the process of completing a well,
so it is ready to produce hydrocarbon
Shown figure presents the most commonly
completion methods from simple to complex
one based on the equipment used in the
wellbore. The main objective of the comepltion
design stage is to maximize the recovery from
the well.
2
Open hole Completion
Open hole completion is one type of completion where the production
casing is set on top of the reservoir, but the open hole section is left
without cemented casing.
3
Open hole Completion
Barefoot Completion
Advantages Disadvantages
Full exposure of reservoir zone Unable to control excessive water or gas
production
No cementing or perforating expense
Unable to isolate hydrocarbon zones
Minimize formation damage
Difficult to do reservoir management
Minimize flow path restriction due to
cementing and perforating Has large potential to produce sand
Minimize wellbore skin Inability to produce at different zones
Improve wellbore performance due to a large
inflow area

Open hole Completion
Pre‐drilled or pre‐slotted liner completion
The pre‐drilled or pre‐slotted liner is slightly more complex.
The liner has holes or slots milled in it before it is installed. It is
still an open hole completion
The liner however will stop the hole from totally collapsing and
aid in getting intervention or logging tools down.
These types of completions can use open hole packers in order
to isolate water or gas intervals.
!!! It is however usually impossible to make the slots small
enough to stop individual grains of sand from being produced.
5
Open hole Completion
Open hole sand control completion
Sand control devices comprise of specialized
surface and downhole equipment including gravel
pack packers and screens to inhibit the
movement of formation sand into the wellbore,
surface pumping equipment, fluid systems, and
filtration systems.
6
Cased hole Completion
Cased and perforated completion is the most common type of
completion which is selected my many companies. For this
completion, a production casing or a liner is cemented through
reservoir zone(s) and subsequently, a well is perforated in order to
provide communication between the formation and wellbore.
Casing is high quality steel pipe that is major structural part of the
oil or gas wells. Casing has no openings and, consequently,
requires Perforation to gain access to the reservoir.
Perforation should ideally penetrate deeper rather than nearer a
wellbore damage zone around a wellbore so fluid from a reservoir
can effectively flow into a wellbore. Additionally, several depth
control methods help to accurately select which section of
reservoir to be perforated. Hence, undesired zones, such as gas,
water or weak formation can be avoided and this will improve well
production efficiency.
7
Cased and perforated wells are completed by first drilling through
the reservoir (or sometimes a little deeper than the bottom of the
reservoir). The production casing is then run and cemented in-
place. Next, the tubing string is run, and all packers are set.
Finally, the perforation guns are run and fired to create the access
to the reservoir.
A perforation gun is an array of shaped charges that can be
arranged in many configurations to achieve the objectives of the
well. The perforation guns can be conveyed (deployed) either on
wireline (wireline conveyed perforation guns) or on the tubing
itself (TCP Tubing-Conveyed guns)
Cased and perforated completions provide the highest level of
control for the well, and when used in conjunction of systems
of Packers which are capable of providing Zonal Isolation across
multiple reservoir zones.
Packers provide isolation in the annulus of the well.
8
Cased hole Completion
There are several advantages of the cased and perforated completion over the open hole completion:
Better zonal isolation. Selectivity in production and injection.
Better reservoir management. Ability to shut-off water, gas or sand through relatively simple
techniques
Effective way to complete multiple zones in one well
Less sand production than open hole completion
