1) a) -32 = 9 b) 12 = 1 c) -12 = 1

2) Complete the table of values for x 2 3 4 5 6 7

y = x2 - 9x + 20 y 6 2 0 0 2 6
3) What type of graph is this? B
A
Linear, reciprocal, cubic or quadratic? quadratic

4) Do you draw quadratic equations with a

straight line or a smooth curved line? smooth

5) Are all quadratic graphs symmetrical? Y or N

Where would you draw the line of symmetry?

6) Where is the turning point? E

D C
7) What are the solutions for the graph? 4 and 5
E
Quadratic graph

Equations where the highest power of x is 2 (x2) are called quadratic

equations
They create a ‘U’ or ‘n’ shape when drawn graphically.

All quadratic graphs have a line of symmetry.

Positive quadratic graphs (where Negative quadratic graphs (where
a> 0) are U-shaped and have a a < 0) are ∩-shaped and have a
turning point at the bottom of the turning point at the top of the
curve.
curve.
Another way to solve a quadratic equation is to draw its graph.
Example
(a) Complete the table of values for y = x2 - 9x + 20
x 2 3 4 5 6 7
y 6 2 0 0 2 6

x2 - 9x + 20 x2 - 9x + 20 x2 - 9x + 20
( ) 2 –9( ) + 20 (3)2 – 9(3) + 20 (4)2 – 9(4) + 20
(2)2 – 9(2) + 20 9 – 27 + 20 = 2 16 – 36 + 20 = 0
4 – 18 + 20 = 6
(b) On the grid below, draw the graph of y = x2 - 9x + 20 for values of x from x = 2
to x = 7
Using the coordinates calculated in the table. Plot the co-ordinates
x 2 3 4 5 6 7
y 6 2 0 0 2 6

TIP: When joining up the

points that you have plotted,
join them with a smooth
curve, not a straight line!
(c) Find estimates of the solutions of the
equation y = x2 - 9x + 20
We can use it to solve: x2 - 9x + 20 = 0
The answers are along the x axis where
the graph reaches y = 0 (where it crosses
the x axis).

Using the graph the answers are:

x = 4 and x = 5.
(c) Find estimates of the solutions
of the equation x2 - 9x + 20 = 4
y=4 The answers are where the curve
crosses the line y= 4

Using the graph the answers are:

x = 2.5 and x = 6.5
