Linguistic barriers

• Foreign Language
• Communication between people of different countries becomes difficult if neither of the speakers has a common
language to communicate in.
• Dialects are regional variants of a language. English spoken in the UK has 37 dialects. The use of may result in
miscommunication.
• Accents are peculiar ways of pronouncing words of a language. Accents occur when speakers belonging to different
regions or countries speak a language not their own. This causes difficulty in understanding what is being said.
• Jargon is language or words that are specific to a particular profession. Excessive use of jargon in communication may
make comprehension difficult. For example – a doctor’s prescription, the results of a medical test, financial and legal
documents need interpretation of experts for the layman.
• Slang refers to those words or expressions that are peculiar to a group of persons who are familiar with it. It is an
informal language that persons.
Psychological Barriers

The psychological barrier of communication is the influence of psychological state of the


communicators (sender and receiver) which creates an obstacle for effective communication.
• Causes of Psychological Barriers
• Lack of Attention
The communication will face challenges and become ineffective when a person’s mind is
preoccupied or distracted, the person is not able to listen what others tell him/her, and does not give
proper feedback. The communication will face problems and becomes ineffective.
Poor Retention:
Retention of information is the capacity of the memory of the brain to store information. Similarly,
brain also loses information that is old with the passage of time.

An emotional barrier is a mental limitation that


prevents you from openly communicating your
thoughts and feelings. It is often the result of low
emotional intelligence, also known as emotional
awareness or control. Overcoming emotional
barriers isn’t easy because emotions act as
powerful motivators. It can trigger an emotional
response that's inappropriate or unproductive.
Cultural barriers in communication

• The first cultural barrier to communication is ethnocentricism. The belief


that one's culture is superior to another's is known as ethnocentrism. It
makes a person feel that only their way of doing things is right.
Ethnocentric people look down on people from other cultures, making
them feel undervalued.
• A few common instances where people in the workplace experience
cultural barriers can be in their differences in greeting each other, making
eye contact, being punctual, dress code, and so on.

• A physical barrier to communication is a physical factor or element that


inhibits effective exchanges between two or more parties. Some barriers
can be environmental, such as the design of an office space compromising
casual employee communication, or disruptive ambient noise during a
conversation.

Perceptual barrier of
communication

Perceptual barriers to communication are the obstacles that


arise when two or more individuals have different
perceptions of what is being communicated. These can
occur in verbal and nonverbal communication, often
leading to misunderstandings, confusion, and frustration.
Physiological barriers of
communication
Physiological barriers:
• They are limitations caused by a person’s health
condition or disability, such as hearing loss, poor
eyesight, illness, or unconsciousness. An example to
overcome this barrier is using a visual aid to educate a
blind patient causes a potential barrier.
Technological barriers of
communication
Technological barriers in Communication refers to the
obstacles and challenges that arise from the use or misuse
of technology in exchanging information.
• Poor internet connection during meeting.
• Notice and distraction in virtual meeting.
• Limited access to technology in remote areas.
