The Animal Kingdom

An Overview of Animal Classification

and Characteristics
Classification of Animals
• Animals are classified into two main groups:
• 1. Vertebrates
• 2. Invertebrates
• Each group is further classified into various
phyla.
Vertebrates
• Vertebrates are animals with a backbone.
• They are classified into five major classes:
• 1. Mammals
• 2. Birds
• 3. Reptiles
• 4. Amphibians
• 5. Fish
Invertebrates
• Invertebrates are animals without a backbone.
• They are classified into several phyla including:
• 1. Arthropods (e.g., insects, spiders)
• 2. Mollusks (e.g., snails, octopuses)
• 3. Annelids (e.g., earthworms, leeches)
• 4. Cnidarians (e.g., jellyfish, corals)
• 5. Echinoderms (e.g., starfish, sea urchins)
Mammals
• Characteristics of Mammals:
• 1. Warm-blooded
• 2. Have hair or fur
• 3. Most give birth to live young
• 4. Produce milk to feed their young
Birds
• Characteristics of Birds:
• 1. Warm-blooded
• 2. Have feathers
• 3. Lay eggs
• 4. Have a beak and no teeth
Reptiles
• Characteristics of Reptiles:
• 1. Cold-blooded
• 2. Have scales
• 3. Lay eggs
• 4. Breathe air through lungs
Amphibians
• Characteristics of Amphibians:
• 1. Cold-blooded
• 2. Live both in water and on land
• 3. Lay eggs
• 4. Undergo metamorphosis
Fish
• Characteristics of Fish:
• 1. Cold-blooded
• 2. Live in water
• 3. Have gills for breathing
• 4. Have fins for swimming
Arthropods
• Characteristics of Arthropods:
• 1. Exoskeleton
• 2. Segmented bodies
• 3. Jointed limbs
• 4. Include insects, spiders, crustaceans
Mollusks
• Characteristics of Mollusks:
• 1. Soft-bodied
• 2. Most have a hard shell
• 3. Include snails, clams, octopuses
Annelids
• Characteristics of Annelids:
• 1. Segmented bodies
• 2. Include earthworms, leeches
Cnidarians
• Characteristics of Cnidarians:
• 1. Radial symmetry
• 2. Tentacles with stinging cells
• 3. Include jellyfish, corals
Echinoderms
• Characteristics of Echinoderms:
• 1. Radial symmetry
• 2. Spiny skin
• 3. Include starfish, sea urchins
Conclusion
• The Animal Kingdom is diverse and complex,
encompassing a wide range of creatures.
• Understanding the classification and
characteristics of animals helps us appreciate
the biodiversity of our planet.
